A new world record of 293 words per minute (wpm) was apparently set last weekend by the aptly named Twitter user@MythicalRocket. From typistuploaded a videoof the speed running to his YouTube account shows that he reaches 293 wpm in 15 seconds with an accuracy of 97%Aaptype30th of April. This followed a record run just a day earlier in which he won the272 wpm with 98% accuracy for 60 seconds.

You might be surprised to learn that MythicalRocket isn't a court stenographer or transcriptionist (or a mythical rocket), but a 16-year-old from Florida who only started speed typing a few years ago. He set his current full-size recordSteelseries Apex Prowith optical switches, although he says he doesn't believe the type of switches makes much difference in speed.

“I used to use the Apex 7, which is basically the Apex Pro but with brown switches, and I was almost as fast,” he told me via Twitter DM. "In the beginning it took some time to get used to the service, but after a few weeks I was up to date again."

I asked if he only used SteelSeries keyboards and he said, "Pretty much." I also asked if SteelSeries had at least sent him some swag, and he replied, "Haha, I'd love to, but I haven't gotten anything from the writing yet" — without the online rumor, of course. Finally, he said he tried the Logitech G915, but didn't like its low profile.

As for MythicalRocket's favorite keyboard layout, it's the tried and true QWERTY. This may come as a surprise, as many typists are known to use alternative, supposedly more efficient layouts, such asDvorakofColemak.

“QWERTY isn't actually that bad, and this is coming from someone who also has 200+ wpm scores on other alt layouts,” says MythicalRocket, who also runs Colemak andCanaries, said.

The current "official" Guinness World Record holder for fastest typist still appears to be Barbara Blackburn, whose top speed was 212 wpm using a Dvorak format. Of course, the “official” world record has been unofficially broken several times in personal writing competitions and online leaderboards. (MythicalRocket has not contacted Guinness to make his record "official", and he appears to have no plans to do so.)

I do about 90 of them, but the problem with most typing tests is that they require you to make up random words like Monkeytype does, instead of writing a paragraph of your choice. I write slower when I have to write what someone else wrote or asked, but faster when I know what I'm writing.

At that point it's not "Typing Speed".

That's the "Copy and Paste" speed.
