He was so important to the show's heyday, he helped his best friend Rick Grimes' family through what they thought was his death, fell in love with his wife in the process, and ultimately couldn't stop himself from the downward spiral that he was on. on.
Shane, played by Jon Bernthal, had such a larger-than-life screen presence that it's hard to believe he was no longer on the show. Yep, that means if you haven't seen much of the show yet, Shane won't leave the apocalypse alive.
Shane entersThe living Deadseason 2, episode 12, "Better Angels", in what was easily one of the show's most shocking scenes at the time. He challenges Rick out in the open on Hershel's ranch, forcing his best friend to pull out his gun and have an old western gunfight. Rick refuses and tells him he will have to shoot an unarmed man. He then hands his gun to Shane, distracting him for a moment so he can stab him in the chest. Shane then dies in Rick's arms on the farm as Rick emotionally tells him that he was responsible for the way things turned out.
He waits for Shane to come back to life as a walker, but before that can happen,Karelappears and raises his gun. Thinking he's pointing the gun at him, Rick pleads with his son, unaware that Shane has gotten up behind him. In an incredibly tense moment, Carl pulls the trigger and shoots over Rick's shoulder to lay down the walker that Shane had become.
It was a defining moment forTWDfor many reasons, it marks the end of the original era with Shane's death, and the beginning of both Carl and Rick's downward spirals. It was also the penultimate episode of Season 2, in which the sound of Carl firing shots into a crowd of walkers set the stage for the huge showdown at Hershel's farm.
