The Strength of Mild Steel Sheet Metal

Regular steel usually has a tensile strength between 50,800 psi (350 MPa) and 60,900 psi (420 MPa). This level of tensile strength makes it possible for steel to support the weight of traffic moving over a bridge or the people and equipment inside a building.

Mild Steel remains popular today due to its strong weldability and its resistance to corrosion, making it an excellent choice for almost any project where strength or chemical protection are a priority. Its relative lightness also makes it ideal for mobile applications, such as aircraft frames or cabinetry.

Is mild steel hard to cut? ›

Uses of mild steel

Prone to Rusting. Another disadvantage of mild steel is that it is prone to rusting. Rust is a type of corrosion that occurs when iron or steel comes into contact with water and oxygen. Over time, the water and oxygen will cause the iron or steel to corrode, eventually leading to rusting.

For steel water features we recommend the use of normal mild steel. Since that rusts quicker, we recommend to use a minimum of 4mm thickness. You can expect that to last up to 15 years.
