1018 vs. 4140 Steel: Choosing between two important metals (2024)

This makes 4140 an excellent choice for parts that require impact resistance and torsional strength. Connecting rods and crankshafts are often made from 4140. So are many parts used in the logging industry, oil and gas applications, machine tools, jigs, jigs and fixtures. It is also quite workable, although not quite to the level of the 1018. If 4140 steel were as weldable and formable as its mild steel counterpart, there would be no reason to choose the latter, but on this point falls 4140 short. It can be welded, but not as easily as 1018, and will become brittle without proper procedures, such as heat treatment after welding.

Choice, choice

So where does that leave product designers and manufacturers? As mentioned earlier, these two metals are popular for a reason. Both offer clear advantages, as well as some obvious differences that can affect the price and function of the finished part. CNC milling or turning a 4140 workpiece requires slightly lower cutting speeds and feeds than a 1018 workpiece. Tool wear is also slightly greater when machining alloy steels, although any difference in final price due to such machining considerations is likely secondary to functionality. and product performance.

As mentioned, 4140 is harder and more hardenable than 1018. If your application requires a workpiece that is both “thoroughly hard” and extremely impact resistant, then 4140 is a clear choice. However, it is less cold workable than 1018, making a recessed or crimped connection unlikely. And as mentioned, 1018 is every welder's dream. The same cannot be said for 4140, although it has a significant advantage in corrosion, heat and wear resistance due to the higher carbon content and small amounts of molybdenum and chromium present in 4140 steel.
