However, it is not uncommon to see both sheet metal and plate further measured in mm.
Plate and plate production
When molten metal comes out of the blast furnace, it is poured in continuouslybats, and plates. Billets are commonly used to form bar stock and wire, while plates are used to produce sheets and plates. Plates leave the casting process in thicknesses often greater than 4". To make a usable metal sheet or plate, this thickness must be reduced.
To reduce and, above all, standardize the thickness over the entire length of the metal product, the metal is also rolledhot or cold. If the metal is rolled while hot (above the recrystallization temperature), it is called hot rolling. The metal is passed through rollers that gradually reduce the thickness of the metal until it reaches the desired thickness. This thickness can be as little as 11 thousandths of an inch.
If the final metal product is more than 6mm thick, it is known as sheet metal and is part of the structural metal family. All products thinner than this are considered sheet metal.
Cold rolling is performed when the material needs more strength or when a very precise thickness is required. The reduction in thickness with each pass is lower than with hot rolling, so cold rolling takes longer than hot rolling.

It is important to note that when measuring sheet metal products, the gauges are neither standard nor metric and have independent values. A conversion table should be used to convert the meter to mm or inches.
A number of different measuring systems are used today, with different types of metal having different measuring systems. An aluminum plate of 8 Ga. for example, measures 0.1285 inches. While an 8 Ga. plate of stainless metal measures 0.17187 in. The two metals have different measuring systems, resulting in different thicknesses for the same thickness.
