Decisions regarding this distinction often depend on the judgment of a mujtahid, and the decisions are generally derived from sacred texts such as the Qur'an.
Food and drink are a common concern for people who practice Sharia law. A person must be familiar with what is not allowed, to better understand the things that are allowed. For example, alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited and any product containing even small traces of pork or birds with claws is also haram. Certain parts of animals are also restricted, including blood and marrow. In addition, the equipment used to manufacture products and the storage methods for these products must be halal and not contaminated with haram substances.
As such, processed drinks such as soft drinks can be considered halal drinks. If the preparation and storage methods are considered hygienic, the drinks are considered halal. Cleanliness includes considerations not only of equipment and storage, but also of the hygiene of the overall environment and the cleanliness of employees. For example, working conditions that contain dirt or pests will make products from that environment haram, as will unhealthy or unsanitary workers. Specific ingredients used in processed drinks must also be halal.
Water is perhaps the most common and basic drink for humanity, and most forms of this essential substance are halal drinks. The exceptions are if the water is contaminated in some way or if it is mixed with substances considered haram. Otherwise, this natural substance is allowed.
The same considerations apply to beverages derived from plant products. In general, any type of plant or product is halal, except the aforementioned pork products and products from birds with claws. As such, fruit or vegetable based drinks, including juice, would be largely acceptable as halal drinks.
Dairy products such as milk are another main category of drinks, and in most cases these liquids are considered halal drinks. If the milk comes from an animal considered halal, such as a cow, it is usually allowed to drink. Exceptions may arise if the milk-producing animal has been routinely fed milk from a haram animal, such as a pig. Mixing the drink with banned substances such as alcohol would also damage its halal status.

Pork products are not typically found in beverages. Points of concern with drinks are the presence of alcohol and with yoghurt drinks the use of rennet.
However, for most basic drinks, such as tea, milk or fruit juice, this is not a problem. The last I heard was that there was even halal non-alcoholic wine on the market.
@ddljohn-- Yes, there are a few consumer groups I know of that test products to determine if they are halal or not. Now I don't know what kind of lab they use for their tests and if they are reliable. But don't be too sure about soft drinks, as some appear to contain small amounts of alcohol. Sometimes this is due to a flavor extract used in the soft drink, such as vanilla extract. Vanilla-flavored soft drinks, for example, should be avoided.
However, each product must be tested individually, so generalizations are not possible.
How do I find out if my favorite soft drink is halal? Is there an organization that tests these products?
I believe that most soft drinks on the market would be halal because they are also sold in Muslim countries.
