A number of Spicy Chicken menu items are expected to arrive at McDonald's later this year.
The fast-food chain plans to launch a Spicy BBQ Sandwich and Spicy BBQ Glazed Tenders in mid-September, according to leaked documentsobtained by Business Insider. "Brace yourselves, because McDonald's is bringing the heat starting in September," a McDonald's representative told Business Insider in an email.
This is in line with a spirited movement among peers.Chick-fil-A started testing a spicy chicken sandwichin January andSpicy Chick-n-Stripsin May. Last year Burger Kingunveiled the new Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwichwith deputy officer Conor McGregor.
McDonald's has not followed suit.
The presence of spicy chicken on the menu has had a rocky journey over the past decade. McDonald's canceled its Hot 'N Spicy chicken sandwich in 2006 after tepid sales. McDonald's acknowledged at the time that it didn't have the right spice mix and that it was a little too hot for customers.The Chicago Tribune reported this.
McDonald's tried to roll out a revamped version of the sandwich on the Dollar Menu in 2013, but it again failed to catch on.
Since oneChange.org petitionemerged in 2015 and fans have called for McDonald's to bring a version of spicy chicken back to the menu.
McDonald's answer to spicy chicken comes in the form of spicy barbecue. “The new menu items are variations on the chain's Crispy Buttermilk Sandwiches and Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, taking the chicken and adding a Southwestern sauce with a hint of jalapeños,” Business Insider reports.
While it's uncertain whether a regular spicy chicken sandwich is in development, fans appear to be at least getting a version after four years of asking.
