Although the SpanishBInvis not difficultpronunciation, They are often confusing for starting Spanish students who are easily tempted to give them the same sounds they have in English.
HowBInVPronounced as
The most important thing to remember about pronouncing the SpaniardsBInvIs it pronounced on standard SpanishIn factBoth.Selvom Engels distinguishes itself in how the two letters are pronounced, Spanish not for all practical purposes,BInvCan be considered the same letter with regard to decision.CevicheofCebiche, a type of seafood bowl) can be spelled with both letters.
What can make things a little complicated for starting Spanish students is that each of the letters has two different sounds that vary, depending on the letters or sounds around them, and both differences of (although they look) the English sounds.
The two sounds are:
- Hard "Bofv:This sound is known inphoneticsLike an expressed stop.
- Soft"Bofv:This sound is the most common of the two and is classified as a expressed bilabial freeeative, which means that an expressed sound that is "pressed" between the two lips and forms a kind of buzzing sound."V" but with the two lips that touch instead of the lower lip and upper teeth.
HardBofvUsed after breaks, such as at the start of a sentence, or when a word is alone and startsBofv. It is also used afterMofNsounds, the latter of which may sound a lot like oneMIf it's for oneBofv. Some speakers also use the hardBofvnaDwith words likewarning(Warning).
- VMasters to the beach.(Let's go to the beach. Thevcomes at the start of the sentence.)
- We will finish electricityBArgo to the country.(We want to end the embargo to the country. B comes after oneM.)
- IvThe forgotten cookies with transparent films.(The packaged cookies in plastic wrap.NiThey wrapped it inSounds a lot like oneM.Newing how the only the first v inivOlvieronGets the loud noise.)
In other situations, the softBofvUsed.Between vowels it can become extremely soft.
- EvSolution is studied in classesBIologia.(Evolution is being studied in biology lessons. Note howBibiologyGets the soft sound, even when it comes at the start of the word.In the normal speech there is no break in betweenbiologyand the previous word.)
- We sang on the beach.(We sang on the beach. TheBpronounced because it comes between two vowels.)
- ¡BHvin!(Excellent!) (The first letter gets the loud sound because it is at the start of an expression, butvis between vowels.)
In the wordclearly(clearly),Bgets the loud noise whilevGets the soft sound.
Like one aloud in Spanish spelled,BSometimes mentioned asBe long,,Be the grand, ofBe largaTo distinguish it fromv, usually calledare(who became the official name a few years ago),in down,,ve chica, ofBrief.
The problem with hom*ophones
Although LatinBInvWere pronounced otherwise, they were gradually merged into Spanish.gay person:
- It is normal(enough),when(Stretched out)
- Bello(Nice),Vello(A bird off)
- property(property),you will(conjugated form ofcome, coming)
- rebel(to make rebellion), Revelarse (to reveal itself)
- Read (Bagagerolers),Vaca(That is)
- immature(bitter),collection(Heritage)
Main learning points
- In standard Spanish,BInvare identical in terms of pronunciation.
- OfBInvsomething like this is pronounced as a soft version, the English "B" after a break and afterwardsMSound.
- In other situationsBInvSomething like the English V is pronounced, but with the lips that touch each other.
