Living in the US (I'm an American born here) I've always noticed that foreign things seem to be more important than domestic things. Not everything, but enough things (food, design, furniture, language, spirits) that I was aware of even as a child. One exception could be universities, a possible exception to that would be Oxford and Cambridge, mainly because of the Rhodes Scholarship bringing these places to mainstream attention.
