Nearly six weeks after McDonald's Corp.made headlinesKroger Co. said it would stop using a meat product called “pink slime,” which is used in some of the ground beef sold in its stores.

This news follows an ABC News report that contacted the nation's ten largest grocers to see if their ground beef contains "finely textured lean beef," the product made from cuts of beef after all selected cuts of beef have been removed .ABC News investigated the casethe use of finely textured lean beef in ground beef sold in supermarkets.

After March 8 ABC Nightly News, theBusiness couriersasked Cincinnati-based Kroger, which operates 2,400 stores in 31 states, whether the product was used in the grocer's ground beef.

Kroger (NYSE: KR), the nation's largest traditional grocer, said it uses "finely textured lean beef" or so-called "pink slime" in some of its ground beef products.

According to the ABC News report, about 70 percent of the ground beef sold in supermarkets contains the meat filler. Finely textured lean beef is made from low-grade trimmings that are simmered over low heat, fat and tissue are separated using a centrifuge and sprayed with ammonia gas to kill bacteria. The USDA says it is safe to eat.

The spokeswoman for Kroger's Cincinnati/Dayton location sent the following email about the grocer's beef offering:
“Kroger carries ground beef both with and without fine-textured lean beef. For customers who choose to avoid this, we offer a variety of options including Kroger's Private Selection Angus Ground Chuck, Round and Tenderloin; Private Selection All-Natural Ground Beef and Private Selection organic ground beef solid in 1 lb. packages labeled 80% lean and higher; Laura's lean ground beef and ground beef prepared at your local Kroger food safety and quality. This also applies to beef products made with lean beef with a fine structure."

Seven of the ten largest supermarket chains responded to ABC News' email about the use of pink slime in their minced meat. Costco, Publix, H-E-B and Whole Foods all said they don't use lean, fine-textured beef.

Safeway said it is investigating the matter, and Stop & Shop/Giant also uses the filler.
