Living in the seaside town of Brighton, Nigel Bamford, inventor of the Waterblade, became aware of the scarcity of water, not only worldwide, but here in Britain. Since 1960, the amount of water people use in Britain has increased by 66%.
We now use 141 liters of water per day. If current consumption continues not only for us, but worldwide, two-thirds of the world's population will live in water-scarce areas by 2025.
Water is hidden in everything we see: in our cars, our clothes, even in our sandwiches.
We can easily reduce our water footprint. We can buy water-efficient appliances, turn off the tap while brushing our teeth and fix leaks, but how can we significantly reduce our water and energy consumption?
Inspired by the Dyson Air Blade, which was improved by diffusing airflow, Nigel created the water-saving device Waterblade to save significant amounts of water. With help from Innovate UK, the EU and the Green Growth Platform, he developed it to fit easily on most taps.
It uses the surface tension of the water to spread a small current in a layer, allowing efficient washing and rinsing, but using significantly less water. It uses between 1.9 and 2.7 liters per minute, compared to a normal tap that uses 10 to 20 liters per minute.
Waterblade has been installed in some of Britain's most recognizable buildings (HSBC Canary Wharf, Birmingham Bull Ring Shopping Centre, The Leadenhall Building, aka the Cheese Grater) and many more worldwide.
The product itself has evolved in sophistication. It is now electro-chromed and includes the latest flow control, meaning it is completely 'plug and play'. All you have to do is change the nozzle of your tap and the flow is optimized for all mains pressures.
Waterblade has won top innovation and water industry awards in the UK and abroad and is now used by companies including Sainsbury's, HSBC, Microsoft, Unilever and many others.
