Cleaning toilets, and especially figuring out how to remove limescale stains from the toilet, can be one of the least glamorous household tasks, but it is a necessary task for a clean and hygienic bathroom. Experts have shared their top tips using just two ingredients.

Chris Wootton, Managing Directorfrom the home cleaning company,Poppies, shared that there is a “golden rule” for cleaning toilet bowl stains.

He said: “The golden rule for removing toilet bowl stains is to use non-alkaline products.

“Most toilet bowl stains occur in areas with hard water, so it is important to remember that bleach does not work and you should use an acidic product such as a descaler.

“Although bleach does not remove limescale, it does make it invisible, which blends in nicely with the color of the toilet bowl.

“This is why toilet bowl stains seem to come back quickly even though they never really go away.”

To make sure the limescale is gone for good, Chris recommends using white vinegar to make your own powerful yet natural cleaning solution.

Chris's advice is to use a non-alkaline cleaning solution, as he suggests a natural cleaning method with vinegar.

He instructed: "It is best to make a strongly acidic solution with white vinegar.

“Pour half a cup of soda into and around the bowl and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.”

“Then pour white vinegar over itsodium carbonate. This causes an effervescent reaction that activates the acid and can break down the most stubborn limescale.

“After about 10 minutes, scrub the toilet thoroughly with a scouring pad – you may need some elbow grease!”

"Once you've done this, rinse it a few times to rinse it all away. This should have been enough, but if there is any residue left, you can also try lemon juice after rinsing as the acidic solution can help removes the most stubborn stains and eliminates odors in the toilet bowl.”

What a natural solutionwhich requires no scrubbing Lynsey Crombie, cleaning expert, TV star and Queen of Clean has shared her advice on how to tackle toilet bowl stains with her homemade solution.

She said, "To get rid of those pesky brown stains on the toilet, I make my toilet cleaning powder with citric acid and baking soda."

Lynsey explained how she uses the solution: “I use two large spoons of baking soda, one large spooncitric acid, add some tea tree essential oil as it is antibacterial.

“Mix them all together and pour it straight down the toilet. Leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing and the stains will be gone."

The expert explained that those who want to use vinegar to remove stains "without scrubbing" should throw out some of the water and then add about 50 ml of water. 250 ml of white vinegar and leave overnight, rinse in the morning.

Of course, dirt and grime in toilets is no surprise, given their primary function.

But if you notice discolored, unpleasant stains on the toilet bowl in or around the rim, it's worth knowing that there are three main things that could be causing this: bacterial growth, hard water, or waiting too long between cleanings.
