Like most people, you're probably pretty attached to your phone, right? Well, Fone King is here to tell you it's good! But time waits for no man (or for any electronic device) and sooner or later you will inevitably have to upgrade. Here are our top seven reasons why it might be time to invest in a new phone:
1. Your contract has expired
If your phone was part of your contract with a network provider, check if you've already paid off the device. If so, not only is it a good time to shop around to make sure you're still on the plan that suits you best, but you might be able to get a new phone at the same time.
Network providers such as Telstra and Optus often have deals on handsets, so check if you can upgrade without paying significantly more.
2. Your phone becomes slow
What most people don't realize is that when you update your phone's software, the new version usually requires more processing power to run efficiently. Over time, these updates become too big for older models to handle comfortably, and your phone may slow down or become buggy. In the worst case, the phone may even freeze.
There's no real fix for this either, so if this happens to you, your best option is almost certainly to upgrade to a newer model that can handle the latest software.
3. The battery is almost empty
Over time, no matter what you do, your phone's battery will hold less and less charge. Sure, you can replace the battery, which can give your phone an extra year or two, but if you've done this before, you may get more value from investing in a newer device.
4. You can no longer perform updates
At some point, the latest software updates become incompatible with older phones because they simply don't have the processing power or memory to run them. Similarly, app developers also do not make their updates compatible with older software versions.
While you may be able to use older versions of apps for a while, they will eventually stop working. If this happens, it could be a sign that you need an upgrade.
5. The phone's specifications no longer meet your needs
When the tech companies release their new devices, they always try to upgrade the specifications of the previous model, such as more storage space, faster processors and better cameras.
If you find that your current phone no longer gives you what you want in these areas, a new device is certainly the right choice.
6. To complete your technology ecosystem
The “ecosystem” is a bit of a buzzword for tech companies and tech heads at the moment. What this essentially means is that all your devices are fully compatible with each other, allowing you to easily switch between them with the most seamless user experience. This is not only very satisfying, but can also save you time and make your life easier.
This is something that Apple in particular has made a name for with the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch and AirPods, all designed to work together seamlessly, but many other tech companies including Samsung and Google are doing this too.
If your phone doesn't work with the rest of your technology, it might be time to upgrade to a version that does.
7. Your phone is damaged and not worth repairing
Most damage can be repaired by a good technician, but if your device is more than five years old, you may get more value in the long run by investing in a new phone than just repairing your existing one.
We recommend that you at least check the repair costs, because they may be less than you think and your old phone can be used as a backup after repair or traded in to get cash from your new device.
