Mornings can be quite hectic and you can't always make a hot, fresh breakfast at home. Then you're probably standing in the drive-thru line at the local fast food restaurant. And if you're a bacon lover (and seriously, who isn't?), you can't do much better for a morning meal on the go than the Wendy's Breakfast Baconator.

The Breakfast Baconator is a towering culinary achievement of smoky bacon strips, a hearty sausage patty, melted American cheese, a perfectly cooked egg, topped with a dollop of hollandaise sauce, and all held together by a large, toasted brioche bun. Truly a masterpiece when it comes to breakfast sandwiches.

There's just one small problem. When the weekend is just around the corner and you've had a late night, getting up early is almost the last thing you want to do. Too bad, because Wendy's no longer serves breakfast baconator at 10:30 am. But don't worry, we've got you covered. Try this homemade version that, dare we say, might even be better than the original.

Building a better breakfast baconator

It's important to do the little things right, and for this recipe it all starts with the bun. You can also use a Kaiser bun or a regular hamburger bun, but for the full experience it should be a toasted brioche bun. Butter is the key here. A layer of butter does not contribute to the bread becoming crispy, it also prevents the rolls from becoming soggy.

Once the buns are in the toaster, it's time to start cooking the bacon and sausage bread. Heat a hot platebaking sheetpan, if you have one, or the largest heavy-bottomed frying pan in your kitchen. When the cooking surface is nice and hot, place sausage roll and bacon on it. When you notice the juices pooling on the sausage patty, turn it over and flip the bacon. Break the egg on the stovetop. For best results you can use an egg ring. After about two minutes the bottom of the eggs should harden. Remove the egg from the ring and turn it over. Reduce heat to low and place a slice of American cheese on top of the sausage bread and egg. Continue cooking until everything is done and the cheese melts

The order in which you assemble the Breakfast Baconator is crucial. Place the sausage bread with cheese on the bottom bun. Cut the bacon strips in half and place half on top. Carefully place the egg on top of the bacon and cover it with the remaining bacon strips. Pour some prepared hollandaise sauce on top and finish with the top bun. Serve with plenty of napkins.

Tips for cooking and serving the breakfast baconator

  • Hollandaise sauce substitutes. No hollandaise sauce, no problem. You can skip it and try a few spoonfuls of salsa or even a slice of avocado instead.
  • Crowd control. If you have a full house, try cooking each part of the dish separately and keeping it warm in the oven.
