Towards the end of the game you will necessarily use more cross hotbars, there's just no way around that. My scholar UI uses seven due to some peculiarities of the class, I would say 3-4 is typical.
TIP: You can switch between hotbars in two ways:
- pressing R1 will cycle through them all,
- Holding R1 and pressing any of the 8 main buttons will take you to a certain bar (try holding R1 and the game will show a button mapping).
I only use the second option because the first becomes very awkward with more than three bars.
TIP: The right side of the hotbars (cross/square/triangle/circle) is easier to use while running, this is where you should place things like instant spells (mages), combo starters (melee) and generally the skills you use . most. Still, you will have to scratch every now and then.
SETTING: Get more room for classroom skills
By default, crossbars 4 through 8 (or something like that, I don't remember) are shared between all your classes. This means you only have 3 bars to use for your class skills. You can increase this number by unchecking the "Drawing Configuration -> Hotbar Settings -> Sharing" tab.
SETTING: Disable pet hotbar
Classes that use pets get a special hotbar for pet-related actions. This bar has a huge tendency to confuse you, as it interferes with your ability to switch freely between the others. The first thing arcanists will do when unlocking their pets is disable the pet bar and instead place the appropriate actions in their default hotbars.
The setting to disable the pet bar is located in "Character Configuration -> Hotbar Settings -> Cross -> General Settings". All pet-related actions can be found in the Pets section of the "Actions and Attributes" menu.
SETTING: Enable extended hold control
I couldn't find a short descriptive name for this setting, and apparently the developers couldn't either. This allows you to press either L2 or R2 to access a specific hotbar, depending on which one is currently active. I can't emphasize enough the usefulness of this option: it doubles the number of skills you can access without a hotbar switch.
The option to enable this is in "Character Configuration -> Hotbar Settings -> Cross -> Extended Team Controls". You also need to choose which hotbar L2->R2 and R2->L2 will be redirected to; you can set both on the same bar if you think you might be clumsy.

About Enable enhanced retention controls
If I'm going to use this, I don't want it in the R1 cycle. I have 3 bars that I cycle through. I don't have an R1; I press R1. Do you know of a way to eliminate crossbars in this cycle? My intention was to "Enable Extended Hold Controls" for non-combat actions, but obviously that doesn't work if I have to cycle through them all the time.
Eos is a power healer when used with sch buffs, making the healing potential of sch buffs almost as powerful as a whm.sch and smn are the hardest jobs in ff14 when it comes to control. If you want to excel at both bar customizations, this is a must for PS users. My main macro is eos embrace and physics combined. Look at Mr. Happy's guide to sch on YouTube. Extremely useful for getting an idea of macros and pet control.
Remember, sch is a damage reducer with heals.
