How many meals per day should we eat to reach and maintain a healthy weight? Most of us have learned to have “three square meals” a day. But having several smaller meals throughout the day can help balance our hunger and calories.

“It is suggested that those who eat more frequent and smaller meals have learned how to limit their intake at each meal and do not have the ravenous appetites that come with the all-day-all-day, all-night-all-night approach,” says Linda By. . Horn, Ph.D., a registered dietitian and professor in the department of preventive medicine at Northwestern University.

“Overall, it is still total calorie intake that determines a person's body size,” says Dr. Van Horn, who is also a volunteer with the American Heart Association. “Excessive calorie intake, spread throughout the day or consumed in one meal, will still contribute to weight gain.”

It may seem like avoiding food is a good way to lose weight, but it isn't. Depriving your body of food isn't good for you, and most of the time you gain all those calories back – and then some – because you end up making yourself so hungry. For a healthier you, focus on spreading your calorie intake throughout the day. And try not to skip meals.

“Those who skip breakfast, eat little or no lunch and then eat a large evening meal tend to have a higher BMI,” says Dr Van Hoorn.

Getting started can be as easy as 1-2-3!

  1. Set your calorie goals.If you want to lose weight, you need to consume more calories than you consume every day. Most people need to cut about 500 calories per day from their diet to lose 1 pound per week. Learn how to make smart choices when dining out and howmaking healthy recipes at home.
  2. Start a food diary.Write down what you eat, the times of day and the portions all in onefood diary or tracker (PDF). This will not only help you keep track of your meals and calorie intake, but could also point out some bad habits you weren't aware of. Do you fill your afternoons with carbohydrate-rich and sugar-rich snacks? Are your portion sizes causing you to exceed your calorie goal? Do you skip meals? Learn how to easily identify the right portions by tracking what you eat.
  3. Have started.It is important for your overall healthget regular exercise. And it can also be a key to losing or maintaining weight.
