An essential part of understanding how long our battery lasts is understanding battery health. We'll show you where to find this information and how to interpret the data to make sure your iPhone's battery lasts as long as possible.
What is the battery status?
The battery in an iPhone is a physical and consumable item. Like a car battery, the iPhone battery wears out over time and with use. The iPhone helps us know the battery status so that we can make decisions.
How does an iPhone battery work?
The iPhone's battery is made of lithium-ion - the most advanced technology available today. With such batteries it is not advisable to either keep them at 100% or leave them at 0% for a long time.
The iPhone and battery have a certain number of charge cycles. A charge cycle is achieved by charging the battery to 100%. However, this does not have to be continuous, that is, you can charge the iPhone at 80% at work and 20% at home. Both charges together make up a full charge cycle. Basically, with lithium-ion batteries, there's no need to continuously charge your iPhone to 100% every time. Just charge it when you want and need it.
Analysis of battery health data on your iPhone
All batteries have a limited lifespan. As time goes by, you will no doubt notice changes in performance due to battery aging.
Where can we find this data to find out more about the condition of our battery? Just go to Settings>Battery>Battery mode. Here you will find two sections:
- Maximum capacity.
- Maximum performance.
The maximum capacity is followed by a percentage (eg 95%). This refers to the wear and tear it has undergone. It comes from the factory at 100% and after two years it can be around 80%. What does it mean? Well, if watching videos used to take ten hours; after two years it would be eight hours.
If your battery health has significantly deteriorated, you will see that you can enable or disable Peak Performance Capability. This means that at some point your battery may not have enough power for some processes. If you enable Peak Performance Capability, your iPhone will limit the speed of the processor so that you don't shut down unexpectedly. This corresponds to the agreed power that you have in your home. If you exceed what the differential can provide, the power goes out.
How to take care of battery health?
First of all, as explained above, we must not forget that all batteries have a limited life and inevitable wear and tear. Nevertheless, you can take the following things into account so that the health of your iPhone's battery lasts as long as possible:
- Avoid high temperatures: Do not charge your iPhone in direct sunlight or outside with an external battery in summer unless absolutely necessary.
- Don't be afraid to charge it for short periods: it's better to do small charges than push the battery to its limits (0%) and charge it to 100% every day.
- Let it charge overnight without worry: iPhone is smart enough to charge the battery overnight. Leaving it to charge overnight will not affect battery health.
When should I replace my battery?
When the battery status is below 80%, battery replacement is recommended. In general, it will take about two years after you buy your iPhone, but it depends on your usage. There are many cases where 80% is reached after four years.
