How do I keep my iPhone battery health at 100%? (1)

It seems that iPhone owners are completely obsessed with the health of their batteries. I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked how to keep an iPhone's battery at 100% health, and there are countless YouTube videos and articles telling owners how to do just that.

I have bad news for you if you are one of those people.

There's only one thing you can do to keep your iPhone's battery health at 100%.

Stop using your iPhone.

Yes, the only way to keep your iPhone's battery at 100% is to stop using it and charge it.

Also: Stop charging your phone overnight

I also have another little tip for those of you who are obsessed with your iPhone's battery health.

Stop worrying about it.

Haven't seen this iPhone stat before? You can find it by tappingSettings > Battery > Battery Status.

How do I keep my iPhone battery health at 100%? (2)

It's a wellness number that doesn't really say anything significant about your battery's actual health. My iPhone tells me that my battery is still at 96% capacity after nearly a year of heavy use.

And after 297 recharge cycles, I guarantee you that number is wrong.

If you want to know how many charge cycles your iPhone has had, I suggest you read thismore detailed article about iPhone batterieswhich will show you how to get these iOS numbers.

According to Apple, the battery is rated to last80% of its capacity after 500 full charge cycles.

This means that my iPhone is at more than half of those 500 charge cycles and yet only 4% battery drain is reported.

As I said, the number is absurd to feel good.

You cannot change the laws of physics.

The bottom line is that as part of the normal process of battery wear and tear, your battery will lose about 1 percentage point every 25 cycles. After 300 recharge cycles, my iPhone will have lost about 12% of its health.

So why is it only showing 4%? Because the battery inside your iPhone actually has a higher capacity than Apple claims.

You can find out how to find theActual battery capacity of your iPhone here. The battery doesn't start to show wear until the capacity drops below Apple's rated capacity.

This is why it takes many weeks or months before "battery health" drops below 100%.

So is there anything else you can do to extend your battery's health besides using it less?

No.

This is normal battery wear.

With that being said, there are a few steps you can take to ease the stress on your battery and reduce further wear and tear.

  • Use a good quality charger.
  • Keep your iPhone at room temperature as much as possible.
  • Don't overload your iPhone.

And do yourself a favor and stop obsessing over the state of your iPhone's battery.
