Your Mac's password is used for many different purposes. This not only allows you to log into your user account, but also unlock the screen when it is automatically locked. This also allows you to enable permissions for apps described in the Privacy & Security pane of System Preferences.
You cannot disable the password completely. However, you can set your Mac so that you don't have to enter the passcode every time you unlock the screen. How to Disable the Passcode on Your Mac.
How to Remove Login Password on Your Mac
The login password is useful if multiple people use your Mac or if you use your MacBook in a public environment. But if you have a desktop Mac and are the only one using it, you don't really need it.
- Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences.
- Select Users & groups.
- Click the drop-down menu next to 'Automatic login' and select your user account.
- Enter your password and click OK.
- Close System Preferences.
Tip
Some changes in the Privacy & Security section of System Preferences require you to enter your password to use them. If you don't want to do this every time, you can use the Privacy moduleCleanMyMac Xcan make changes to the application permissions. You can e.g. check if an application can access the Documents, Camera or Screen Recording folder.
- To retrieve,install and open CleanMyMac X.
- Select the Privacy module and click Scan.
- Select Application permissions and click the arrow next to the application to check its permissions.
- Check the box next to the permission you want to remove and click Remove.
How to Disable Sleep Password on Your Mac
The other time you'll need to enter your password to access your Mac is when you wake it from sleep or need to unlock the screen after the screen saver starts.
- Open system preference.
- Select the Lock screen panel.
- Click the pop-up menu next to the next 'Require Password' and set the time before you need to enter your password.
How to use your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac
An alternative to disabling the passcode completely is to use your Apple Watch (if you have one) to unlock your Mac. The first time you start your Mac after shutting it down, you'll still need to enter your password (unless you've set it to log in automatically, as we showed you above). However, you don't need your password to wake it from sleep; it unlocks automatically when it detects your watch is nearby and you are wearing it.
- Open System Preferences and select Privacy & Security.
- Enable the unlock option for your Apple Watch in the section on the right.
How to change your password on your Mac
Of course, changing your password is not the same as disabling or deleting it. But if you change it to nothing, ie. If you leave the box where you normally type a new password blank, on some Macs and some versions of macOS you can sign in or wake your Mac by simply pressing Enter.
- Open System Preferences.
- Select Users & groups.
- Click on the i icon next to your user account.
- Click Change Password.
- Enter your old password and leave the New Password and Confirm boxes blank.
- Click Change Password to confirm.
