Nintendo Switch supports 2TB Micro SDXC memory cards (where available) (2024)

OfNintendo switch ($299.99 at Amazon)Doesn't come with a huge amount of internal storage. While the PS4 and Xbox One have 500GB and 1TB options, the Switch only offers 32GB. But unlike other consoles, the Switch doesn't need as much storage space thanks to the use of game cartridges.

If you ship a game on an optical drive, it needs a place where the files can be installed so it doesn't take long to load. However, using carts allows the data to stay where it is while allowing for very fast load times. Storage is only needed to store games and extra content (patches, DLC).

Nintendo realizes that more and more gamers prefer to download their content rather than buy physical copies, which is why the Switch is equipped with a memory card slot. The good news is, as reported byNintendo threadit is SDXC compatible, which means that the switch supports Micro SDXC memory cards up to 2 TB.

At launch, additional storage will be limited to 256GB. This is simply because larger memory cards do not yet exist. 512GB cards will appear next, but even if you find one, the price will likely be the same or higher than the Switch. Storage manufacturers have yet to embrace 1TB and 2TB cards.

The important point, however, is that the Switch may look like it has no storage, but it has the potential to add the same, and ultimately more, than what's in a PS4 or Xbox One. However, you pay a small fortune to add such large cards.

Here is an overview of the current prices for Micro SDXC cards:

It's clear that no one is going to buy a card larger than 128GB right now, but should they? A lot will depend on how Nintendo decides to handle accounts for the Switch. Hopefully it won't be like accounts on the 3DS($260.00 on eBay)where transfers between cards were required. If Nintendo ties the account to a person rather than a piece of hardware, multiple smaller cards should work.
