Whether you're taking photos of an engagement ring you're planning to purchase or your driver's license as a reference, you may want to add an extra layer of privacy to the content you capture. With Google Photos, you always have control over the photos you share, save, or even view in your photo grid.
We did that too a few years agolaunched locked folderfor Android devices - a password-protected space to store sensitive photos and videos on the device so they don't show up in your photo grid or other apps. Today we're starting to roll out the ability to backup your locked folder so you can access those photos and videos on all your devices with your password. Moreover, now you can set and access the locked folder on iOS devices and the web.
Photos and videos that you save and back up to your locked folder still don't appear anywhere else in the app. You won't see them in your photo grid, memories, albums, or when you search for photos in Google Photos. When you enable backups for the locked folder, you can access this content on all your devices when you sign in to Google Photos and open the locked folder with your device's password. And as always, any content you back up to Google Photos is protected by one of the world's most advanced security infrastructures. If you prefer not to use the Lock Folder backup features, you still have the option to save content to the Lock Folder on your device.
Another way we help you take control of your photos and privacy is through a simplified and improved settings page in Google Photos that makes it easier to find and adjust your privacy and other settings. The new layout replaces the single settings page with easy-to-navigate sections for privacy, backup, sharing, notifications and more.
The new settings page is now available in Google Photos on Android and iOS, and backup and iOS support for the locked folder is rolling out today.
To automatically back up your Locked Folder for the rest of your photos & videos, you must first turn on backup. You can keep backup for Locked Folder off but still manually back up items in Locked Folder. Items in Locked Folder that you don't back up will only be stored on that device.
When you turn on backup for Locked Folder, you'll be able to access that content across your devices when you sign in to Google Photos and open Locked Folder with your device's passcode.
Open the Google Photos app on your Android device. Tap on the Library tab at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down to the Utilities section and locate the Locked Folder entry.
On your computer, open photos.google.com. Click Locked Folder. Tap Set up Locked Folder. Your Locked Folder password is the same as your Google Account password.
Google Photos now syncs the Locked Folder across all of your devices without compromising security. In other words, you'll now be able to access those sensitive images on iPhones and iPads as well, not just your Android handsets and tablets. The same security principles still apply to Locked Folders.
Now that you've created the Locked Folder and added photos/videos, how do you access it? Open Google Photos, tap Utilities, and scroll to the bottom of the page, where you'll see the Locked Folder entry. The Locked Folder entry is in the Google Folders Utilities section.
The safe folder is available through the Google "files" app, not from Google photos. Open your files app and you should see a folder with a lock. Tap on the folder, enter your pin and then view the private photos.
In addition, users will be able to setup a Locked Folder for the first time on their iOS devices and the web, instead of only on Android. You also have the option to turning on backup for the Locked Folder, which means if you don't want its content to sync to other devices, you can choose to keep backup toggled off.
Are Google photos safe and private? Google Photos keeps your private photos & videos safe. Encryption keeps data private and secure while in transit. When you store your photos, the data you create moves between your device, Google services, and our data centers.
In the “Back up & sync” menu, tap Back up device folders to select the folders you want to back up. If your photos and videos don't sync to your Google Account, check your backup status.
