4. Beware of power-hungry apps

Whatever device you have, your battery will drain faster if you use it for tasks that require more system resources, such as watching videos or playing multiplayer games. So it's a good idea to make sure whatever you're using is properly charged or connected to a power source.

Other apps that require a lot of computing power and therefore battery power are programs that display images in 3D, productivity software such as Adobe Photoshop and Apple iMovie, and advanced games. Less stressful tasks include writing notes or surfing the Internet.

Animated wallpaper, also called live or dynamicwallpaper, looks goodbut requires power for the animation. Don't use it, or at least look for battery-friendly versions.

Peripherals, devices that connect to your computer, such as external microphones, monitors, andextra webcams, draw power from your laptop when it is connected to a USB port on your computer. Use only what is necessary.

Multitasking, such as while listening to musicread an e-book, can also contribute to faster battery discharge. So close an app when you're done using it.

On a Mac you use Activity Monitor, found inFinder|Applications|Utilities|Activity Monitor. You can then choose which apps you should not have open at the moment.

5. Lock your phone

Always lock your smartphone when you are not using it. Many have a button on the right side.

You can still receive calls and texts, but you won't accidentally turn on the phone when it's in your pocket or bag by pressing a button or on the screen. This also prevents embarrassing pocket watch dials.

6. Update your operating system

Be sure to download and install all operating system updates on all your devices as they become available. Manufacturers are constantly testing new ways to improve power management and fix software bugs that can also affect battery performance.

Check if your device isset to do this automatically. It is the best.
