Rebecca Pope plays a tragic and revealing part of Alex's story in the series. In season three, Alex saves a pregnant Jane Doe during the terrible ferry accident and gives her the nickname Ava because she couldn't remember who she was. Ultimately, Izzie convinces Alex to seek psychiatric help from Rebecca, even though Alex claims he has helped his mother in situations like this before. Their relationship is a thing of the past after Alex admits that Rebecca, who suffers from borderline personality disorder, needs more help than he can provide.

We don't learn about their little encounter until late in the series, but on Lecture Day (season six), the ortho surgeon talks about a major reconstructive surgery she performed on Alex. Lucy and Alex get off to a bad start and a rather bitter end. When Alex first meets the attending obstetrician, he calls her patient a turnip. She then softens up to him after Meredith says a good word about him and they learn about their mutual love of college basketball. However, their relationship ends when Lucy takes a job in Africa that Arizona had originally recommended to Alex. When she asks him to tell her a reason not to go to Africa, Alex tells her to go to hell. Well, that's fine because he'll meet the love of his life two seasons later (knock on wood)!

Jolex starts out as good friends who bond during their difficult childhood with Dr. Bailey's wedding. They finally become a couple after Heather's death, but later face difficult roads, especially after his father's arrival in Seattle. He asks her to marry him, which she initially refuses. Alex then finds Jo and Andrew in a compromising position, leading to him beating up the latter and being charged with assault. Shortly after they get back together, Jo pops the big question and covers their house in candles. And then they get married (though only after joining a barn where a dead man lay), despite a series of marital mishaps. Cheers to the happy couple!
