Follow these steps to transfer information to your new device and, if applicable, delete your personal information from your old device.

Before you sell, give away, or trade in your device, you should first transfer data to your new device and then, if applicable, delete your personal data from your old device.

You should not manually delete your contacts, calendars, reminders, documents, photos, or other iCloud information while you are signed in to iCloud with your AppleID. This will delete your content from the iCloud servers and from all your devices signed in to iCloud.

If you still have your old iPhone or iPad

If you shop at an Apple Store with your iPhone, you may need to use your Apple ID password. To save time, make sure you know your password (orreset itto a password you know) before coming to the store.

If you have Stolen Device Protection enabled on your iPhone, changing your passcode in the store will likely have aone hour security delay.

Follow these steps to transfer information to your new device and, if applicable, delete your personal information from your old device.

Transfer information to your new device

If you have a new iPhone or iPad, you canuse Quick Start to automatically transfer informationfrom your old device to your new device if you're using iOS 11 or later.Use iCloud, iTunes or Finder to transfer informationfor your new device if you're using iOS 10 or earlier.

If your phone number changes with your new device,add additional trusted phone numbersto your account to ensure you don't lose access. If you no longer have access to your old phone number, you can do thatgenerate a two-factor authentication codeon your old device if necessary.

If applicable, delete your personal data from your old device

  1. If you have paired an Apple Watch with your iPhone,disconnect your Apple Watch.

  2. Back up your device.

  3. If you purchased an AppleCare plan for your device,cancel your AppleCare subscription.

  4. Sign out of iCloud and iTunes & App Store.

    • If you're using iOS 10.3 or later, tap Settings > [your name]. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password and tap Turn Off.

    • If you're using iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap Settings > iCloud > Sign Out. Tap Sign Out again, then tap Remove from My [device] and enter your AppleID password. Then go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID > Sign Out.

  5. If you switch to a non-Apple phone,unsubscribe from iMessage.

  6. If in-store trade-in is available in your country or region and you're shopping at an Apple Store, stop here, don't erase your device, and go to the nearest Apple Store to pick up your new device. After a specialist has completed your trade-in, he/she will go through the remaining steps with you in the store. If you complete your trade-in online, continue with step 7.

  7. Go back to Settings and tap General > Transfer or reset [device] > Clear all content and settings. If Find My [Device] is enabled, you may need to enter your Apple ID and password. If your device uses eSIM, select the option to delete your device and eSIM profile when prompted.

  8. If you're asked for your device's passcode or restriction code, enter it. Then tap Remove [device].

  9. Contact your network provider for assistance transferring service to a new owner. If you are not using a SIM card with your device, you can contact them for help transferring the service to the new owner.

  10. Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.

When you erase your iPhone or iPad, find my [device] andActiveringsslotis turned off.

If you no longer have your iPhone or iPad

If the above steps are not completed and you no longer have your device, follow these steps:

  1. Ask the new owner to delete all content and settingsusing the steps above.

  2. If you use iCloud and Find My [device] on the device, sign iniCloud.com/findor Find the My App on another device, select the device and click Uninstall. Once the device is removed, click Remove from account.

  3. If you are unable to follow any of the steps above,change your Apple ID password. This won't delete the personal data stored on your old device, but it will prevent the new owner from deleting your data from iCloud.

  4. If you switch to a non-Apple phone,unsubscribe from iMessage.

  5. If you use Apple Pay, you can remove your credit or debit cardiCloud.com. To see which devices use Apple Pay, select Account Settings and then click the device. Click Remove next to Apple Pay.

  6. Remove your old device from your list of trusted devices.

  7. If you purchased an AppleCare plan for your device,cancel your AppleCare subscription.

If you trade in an Android device for Apple

Before you send an Android device to Apple as a trade-in, you need to do the following:

  • Back up your data.

  • Remove the device.

  • Remove all SIM cards, memory cards, cases and screen protectors.

Tapping Erase All Content and Settings will completely erase your device, including any credit or debit cards you added to Apple Pay, and any photos, contacts, music, or apps. It also disables iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, GameCenter and other services. Your content is not deleted from iCloud when you erase your device.
