Reset your Android device to factory settings (2024)

To delete all data from your phone, you can reset your phone to factory settings. Factory resets are also called "formatting" or "hard reset".

Know the Google account username and password

To recover your data after resetting your phone, you'll need to enter security information. Entering the information will indicate that you or someone you trust performed the reset.

  1. Make sure you know a Google account on the phone.
  2. Make sure you know the password of the Google account on the phone. Sign in to that account on another device or computer to verify. If you do not remember the password,get help logging in.
  3. If you have set a screen lock, make sure you know your phone's PIN, pattern, or password. If you can't unlock your phone,learn what you can.

Tip:If you recently reset your Google Account password, wait 24 hours before doing a factory reset.

Back up your data to your Google account

Doing a factory reset will erase your data from the phone. Although the data stored in your Google account can be recovered, it will delete all apps and their data.

Charge and connect

A factory reset can take up to an hour.

  1. Charge your phone to at least 70%.
  2. Connect your phone to Wi-Fi or your mobile network. After the factory reset is completed, you will need to be connected to sign in to your Google account.
