What to do before selling, giving away, dealing with or recycling your Mac (2024)

Reset your Mac to factory settings to prepare them for a new owner.

Before you start

  • If your Mac is covered by an AppleCare plan, you canCancel your AppleCare planofTransfer your AppleCare plan to a new owner.

If your Mac has removed all content and settings

Your Mac has only deleted all content and settings if it meets these requirements:

  • It is aMac met Apple Siliconor aMac with Apple T2 Safety Chip.
  • And it usesMacOS Monterey of later.

If your Mac meets these requirements, follow the steps toRemove your Mac and reset it to factory settings.

If your Mac has not removed all content and settings

If it is to remove all content and settings that are not available on your Mac, these steps will follow instead.Know what macOS your Mac uses.

1. Backups or transfer your files

If you don't have a current backup, you canMake a backup of your filesto external storage devicesTransfer your files to a new Mac.

2. Log in to iTunes

If you use MacOS Catalina or later, you can skip this step.

  1. Select Account> permissions> Permissions> Select this computer in iTunes in iTunes> permissions> permissions.
  2. Enter your Apple ID and the password and click on Doctorise.More information about the authorization.

3. Log out at iCloud

When you follow these stepsLog out of iCloud, You will be asked if you should store a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac.It is faster to simply save a copy because you want to remove your Mac later.

MacOS Ventura of later:

  1. Select Apple -menu > System settings.
  2. Click on your name (Apple ID) in the sidebar.
  3. Right right, scroll down and click on Report.

MacOS Montrey, MacOS Big on Eller MacOS Catalina:

  1. Select Apple -menu > System Preferences.
  2. ClickApple ID.
  3. Select overview in the sidebar.
  4. Click Log out.

Previous versions of macOS:

  1. Select Apple -menu > System Preferences.
  2. Clike on iCloud.
  3. Click Log out.

4. Log out at iMessage

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Select Messages> Settings (or preferences) in the menu bar in messages.
  3. Click on iMessage.
  4. Click Log out.

5. Upair Bluetooth devices (optional)

If your Mac is linked to a keyboard, mouse or other bluetooth device that you intend to save, you can remove it. This optional step prevents unintended input when the Mac and the device have individual owners but in the Bluetooth rangeto stay.

What to do before selling, giving away, dealing with or recycling your Mac (1)If you do this on a Mac that does not have a built-in keyboard or instruction field, connect a USB keyboard and mouse to leave the remaining steps.

  1. Select Apple -menu > System settings (or system preferences).
  2. ClickBluetooth.
  3. Move your marker over the device that you do not have to link and then click the ThedisConnect button button button (X) next to the device name.

6. Remove your Mac

  1. Close your Mac.
  2. Start up from MacOS -recovery and then use Disk tool to remove your Mac.The steps on details floated toUse Disk Utility to remove your Mac.
  3. When you're done, close the disk tools, but don't restart your Mac.

7. Install Makos again

  1. During the recovery of macOS, still select the reinstallation of macOS and then follow the instructions on the screens.More information about reinstalling macOS from the recovery of macOS.
  2. After reinstalling macOS, your Mac will be restarted to an installation assistant.

8. Reset NVRAM

  1. If you use an Intel -based Mac, follow the steps toReset NVRAM. This knew the user settings from the memory and restores certain security functions that may have been changed.
  2. After resetting Nvram, your Mac starts again to the installation assistant.
