Male chickens are kept alive for a few weeks for their meat, but they cannot make money in the egg industry because they do not lay eggs. Both industries treat male birds (and female birds) as disposable, but what happens to them depends a lot on the industry they are unfortunate enough to be born into.
What happens to male chicks?
In the meat trade, male birds are allowed to live with their female counterparts up to six weeks of age. They are kept in large warehouse-style barns that are artificially lit and fed highly processed foods designed to make them gain weight quickly so they quickly reach slaughter weight. At the end of their sad, short lives, they are packed in boxes and sent to the slaughterhouse.
In the egg industry, male chickens are killed on their first day of life. Only chickens are needed because only they can lay eggs. So if a male hatches from the egg, there is no economic use to him. They wouldn't waste their money caring for him or even feeding him, and so these little chicks are killed almost as soon as they hatch.
The industry has devised a host of gruesome ways to kill chickens en masse:
Asphyxiation: The day-old birds are sent to gas chambers, where they suffocate
Maceration: this is an industrial term for the live grinding, also known as 'live shredding'
Electrocution: Groups of chickens are pushed onto an electrically charged surface plate
Suffocation: These babies are tied up in plastic bags until they die
Cervical dislocation: In male chicks, the neck can be broken. This doesn't just happen within the egg industry. Any chicken raised for its meat can have its neck broken if it is deemed too small to be profitable.

Which countries have banned the killing of chickens?
In 2022, Germany banned the slaughter of chickens. Austria, Luxembourg and France have all also banned killing, but that leaves them wondering what to do with these millions of birds.
Why are male chickens destroyed?
They are destroyed because they are not profitable for the egg industry. These baby birds are nothing more than unwanted byproducts and are considered collateral damage in the pursuit of profit.
They do. The birds raised for their meat can be male or female, but the egg industry only wants female birds.
What are the alternatives to culling chickens?
Ultimately, the technology will allow the industry to perform 'in-ovo sexing', meaning the sex of birds can be determined before they hatch. Any males are destroyed in the egg. This may be less inhumane, but can this massive destruction of life ever be considered humane? We don't think so.
Until that technology is effective – and even after that, because there will always be a percentage of male birds hatching – there is a real problem of what to do with the millions of male chicks. There are too many for shelters to rescue and care for, so many cubs are raised for their meat. This means they are transported to warehouse-style stables, packed up with nothing to do and nowhere to go, and eventually sent on an arduous journey to a slaughterhouse. This is the only alternative for the sector and we do not support it.
There is a humane alternative to killing chickens, and that requires us to stop supporting the industries that kill them. To avoid killing young birds, we should avoid purchasing and consuming eggs and meat. Because we can live happily and healthily without either, and because there are vegan versions of virtually all animal foods – including vegan fried chicken, scrambled eggs, cakes, mayonnaise and more – we encourage all compassionate people to choose these foods instead .

When a rooster and a hen engage in mating behavior, the rooster transfers sperm to the hen through a process called "cloacal contact." This occurs when their cloacas, the common opening for reproductive and digestive tracts, make contact, allowing for the transfer of sperm from the male to the female.
Modern crosses are also favorable for meat production because they lack the typical "hair" which many breeds have that must be removed by singeing after plucking the carcass. Both male and female broilers are reared for their meat.
You can raise chickens for meat on a small scale, even in your backyard. Chicks need clean space, heat lamps, bedding, starter feed, and plenty of clean water. Free-range broilers with less outdoor space may sunbathe, aggressively attack, stretch, or pant more than those with more outdoor space.
