On Monday, McDonald's announced it had completed its rolloutfresh beefQuarter Pounders in de hele VS.
Wendy's, long the fast food king among fresh beef burgers, fired back at its rival shortly after McDonald's announced its plans to introduce fresh beef, sending out a series of tweets highlighting that McDonald's had not said it planned to switch to fresh beef for all its burgers.
Kurt Kane, Wendy's head of concept and marketing, told Business Insiderthat "you don't need a decoder ring to figure out what quality you're getting" when you order a burger.

Kane also said that after trying one of McDonald's new burgers, he wasn't concerned about Wendy's customers leaving the chain for McDonald's new Quarter Pounders.
That's why we decided to do our own taste test.
Here's how McDonald's Quarter Pounder with fresh beef compares to Wendy's Dave's Single, made with fresh — never frozen — beef.

First up: McDonald's. I was able to taste the new fast food burger at a media event - and I was impressed with what I found.
“Those looking for a bigger burger... this is what they were looking for,” said Linda VanGosen, vice president of menu innovation at McDonald's.told Business Insider.
“It was hotter, juicier and more flavorful,” VanGosen said. “This meets what they're looking for.”

According to executives, the only change to the burger is the fresh beef. Everything else is exactly the same.
McDonald's says preparing beef simply involves placing the patty on the grill and adding a dash of pepper.
One advantage of fresh beef is that it cooks faster than frozen beef, meaning the new cooking style is unlikely to slow down McDonald's workers.

When I took a bite, I immediately noticed the difference fresh beef makes. Hotter, juicier and finally freed from its mulchy texture, the fresh beef burger is a vast improvement over the old-fashioned Quarter Pounder.
I hadn't realized how much of a handicap McDonald's patty consistency was to the chain's burgers until I had a fresh beef burger.
While the dryness of burgers on a Big Mac can be ignored while other elements take the front line, the Quarter Pounder is vastly improved by the beef upgrade.
However, this is still a McDonald's burger, with the chain's signature flavor.
The closest I can come to describing the signature McDonald's taste is to say that the new Quarter Pounder still tastes like the smell of McDonald's, just a little better.

So McDonald's fresh beef burger is better than its previous version. But is it better than Wendy's?
I was trying to spot the classic Dave's Single on a quarter pounder.
I ordered poorly, so I ended up getting a regular burger - just cheese and beef - but I thought this would let the natural flavor of the beef take center stage.

Wendy's burger didn't need any toppings to top McDonald's. The burger is just that good.
I'm focusing on the steaks here, and Wendy's fresh beef rules.
McDonald's burger is juicier and hotter than the previous attempts, but Wendy's is even juicier and hotter.

Wendy's burger epitomizes quality, while McDonald's is simply an improvement on something that needed to be fixed.
Maybe it's because Wendy's spent decades cracking the code on fresh beef, or maybe McDonald's just needs to keep its signature fast-food flavor. Whatever the reason, Wendy's is still the top dog in the latest fast food burger battle.
