Roswell, New Mexicospoilers follow.
Not even all the otherworldly forces of all the aliens together could come together and saveRoswell, New Mexicoof termination. And forlang, old fans, this is actually the second cancellationRoswellviewers are forced to endure the trackingthe demise of the original in 2002.
But at least restartRoswell, New Mexico, survived an additional year, sparking this revivala total of four seasons.
So why did the CW decide to shut down#Malexand all their friends? And what could a potential fifth season look like? Here you will find everything you need to knowRoswell, New Mexico cancellation that happened in May 2022, along with what's next for this franchise.
WhyRoswell, New Mexicohad been cancelled
If it's any consolation,Roswell, New Mexicowas one of many shows that The CW destroyed in 2022, includingBatwoman,Legends of tomorrow, evenSubsidies, the last one has leftVampire Diaryshow in the air.
When the cancellations were first announced, no official reason was given, but industry experts assumed discussions about a sale with Nexstar played a major role. Director change at Warner Bros. after the Discovery acquisition it probably didn't help either.
Now that the sale has closed, reports suggest that The CW plans to appeal to more older viewers with its upcoming slate. It's so easy to see why younger, skewed shows like thisRoswell, New Mexicodidn't fit that vision, and their reliance on special effects probably made them easier to remove from a financial perspective as well.
There will be oneRoswell, New Mexicospin-off of film?
WhenRoswell, New Mexicowas canceled in May, it gave the writers a small window to adjust their scripts so that both fans and the show could enjoy a happy ending instead of a frustrating cliffhanger that would never be resolved.
However, this final episode still wasn't the endRoswells team had in mind.
To talk withEW, showrunner Chris Hollier said, "This [final] was intended to help us have a great ending to season five. More craziness would have followed."
This "madness" is said to have taken the form of multiple time jumps intended to give the show what Hollier describes as a "legacy ending".
“What does it mean when you start finding the people you want to be with? How do you actually go about creating your own happily ever after? I loved where we were going to take those characters. We had about putting the ending in it for years to come the future It would have been another ending with where all our couples were.
At least Michael and Alex, aka #Malex, got the happy ending they deserved.
“We did it for a number of reasons,” says Hollier when asked about their wedding. "The one we knew everyone wanted. It was also a nice way to say goodbye, when we had to say goodbye, to bring everyone together. That's what weddings do. And if there was more to come, We also want to take them to a new state with new challenges to overcome."
However, Hollier admits that things would have been much darker for Max and Liz, another fan-favorite couple whose season five was greenlit anyway:
“There was a moment we talked about earlier where the console behind Liz might have melted. If someone had said, “You have the green light for season 5,” it could have been a bigger discussion. But I think this is a fairer place to leave the fans behind."
This will be expanded upon during another conversation withWide fanHollier said, "I'm very lucky with the time we had, but you always feel like we still had a bullet in the chamber."
And that's why Max and Liz's story ended the way it did.
“We left it open-ended with a hopeful feeling, allowing people's imaginations to fill in what happened next when he returned,” says Hollier.
But will people's imaginations ever be filled with an actual continuation of the story? Season four ratings werethrough season three, making an early return seem even more unlikely. To be fair, it probably didn't help that the show was canceled before season four even aired.
The franchise's only shot now really is another reboot somewhere down the line. With ten books by Melinda Metz to draw from, there is still plenty of room for a new perspectiveRoswellone day. Let's hope it doesn't take another seventeen years to get here.
