Who are retirees in the gray zone?

Retirees in the gray area are members who served in the Guard or Reserve, are eligible for retirement benefits and have retired (no longer drilling), but are not yet of age to receive retirement benefits. The time between their retirement and the date they are eligible to receive their retirement benefits is the “gray area.” The "gray area" applies even if the member is on the retired reserve.

A Guard or Reserve member is generally not eligible to receive back pay until they reach age 60. However, in some periods of active duty or active service, the age requirement may be lower than 60 years (reduced old-age pension). For the correct periods of active duty or active duty, please contact your branch. The earliest age at which a gray zone retiree can receive a reduced old-age pension is 50 years.
