Leave benefits behind during the transition (2024)

Permissive Temporary Duty (PTDY)

When you are ready to find a job or place to live after your divorce, you may qualify for approved PTDY. PTDY eases the transition to civilian life by providing free time to search for homes and jobs. This benefit is intended for military members who are involuntarily separated under honorable circ*mstances or retiring from active duty.

Personnel discharged or discharged from active duty due to involuntary separation under honorable conditions may be granted up to 30 days of leave or modified for up to 10 days of PTDY, if necessary to facilitate relocation. However, the leave may not be available if it would hinder military missions.

The spouse of an eligible involuntary separatist or a retiree may tour on a military aircraft to house and job hunt on an available seat. He or she does not need to be accompanied by a military spouse. Likewise, if you attend a DoD-approved transition assistance seminar, you can take advantage of a military airlift, if available.

Service members who separate at the end of a normal term of service (ETS – Expiration Term of Service) or (EAOS – End of Active Duty Obligated Service) are not eligible for PTDY.

Sell leave back

Enlisted troops can sell back leave when they reenlist or when they leave the military with an honorable discharge. Officers can sell back leave only if they are honorably separated from the military. Members can sell backup for 60 survival days during their career.

Separates and/or gives members extra leave

Members approaching transition with additional leave have three choices about what to do with that leave. They can: (1) use the leave before the transition, (2) sell the leave back if they transition (3) take terminal or separation leave.

Use of ordinary leave

Members transferring may, with approval, choose to use their regular leave prior to transfer.

Sell leave back

Transitioning members can sell back unused vacation days. Members are authorized to receive a cash payment for any unused leave when they separate from the military, retire or separate with an honorable discharge.

Take terminal leave

If you are dismissed, you can also take so-called terminal or separation leave.

Terminal leave is the same as regular leave, except that members no longer have to report to their place of employment after the leave ends. The member can move to the desired location without returning to work.
