The PATRIOT is the U.S. Army's most advanced air defense system. Capable of defeating both high performance aircraft and tactical ballistic missiles, it is the only operational air defense system that can shoot down attacking missiles.
The Army initially said the Patriot achieved an 80 percent success rate in Saudi Arabia and 50 percent in Israel. Those claims later were scaled back to 70 percent and 40 percent.
The report finds that the failure to track the Scud missile was caused by a precision problem in the software. The computer used to control the Patriot missile is based on a 1970s design and uses 24-bit arithmetic.
The Global Patriot® air defense solution is a missile defense system consisting of radars, command-and-control technology and multiple types of interceptors, all working together to detect, identify and defeat tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, advanced aircraft and other threats.
The Patriot is a highly complex system to operate, and typically takes U.S. soldiers up to a year to learn. But after just a few weeks, the Ukrainians were already able to independently set up and operate the system against a simulated threat in under 45 minutes, which is the U.S. Army's standard.
Three shorter range tactical anti-ballistic missile systems are currently operational: the U.S. Army Patriot, U.S. Navy Aegis combat system/SM-2 missile, and the Israeli Arrow missile. In general short-range tactical ABMs cannot intercept ICBMs, even if within range (Arrow-3 can intercept ICBMs).
While initially designed as an antiaircraft system, newer variants of Patriot are capable of engaging ballistic and cruise missiles, loitering munitions, and aircraft.
“It was not a requirement…but it turns out Patriot has some capability,” Vice-Admiral Jon Hill, director of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, told a Senate hearing recently. “It's got the natural ability [to intercept hypersonic missiles] because it is a cruise missile killer,” he added.
The chief weakness of the Patriot Missile System is its size and number of personnel required to operate the system. It is a large system that is largely immobile (shoot and scoot would not work well with this system).
The Indian Air Force has acquired from Russia the S-400 Triumf—widely recognised as the world's most-advanced air defence system. On the indigenous front, Project Kusha by DRDO is set to provide the air force with a long-range air defence system, with deployment targeted for 2028-29.
Eventually, all of those upgraded elements will become a new system known as Integrated Air and Missile Defense. The first piece to be replaced will be the Patriot's command-and-control system, which will be swapped out with the Northrop Grumman-developed Integrated Battle Command System.
Today, there are 15 battalions fielded across the active-duty force. The service has programmed funding for a 16th battalion, but it is not manned or fielded yet, according to an Army spokesperson. Each of the battalions includes four Patriot batteries.
The power and agility of Patriot's radar is also highly resistant to countermeasures, including ECM, radar jamming, and use of RWR equipment. Patriot is capable of quickly changing frequencies to resist jamming.
Although the Patriot has broader coverage, the low cost of UAVs and operational scenarios they would be encountered in would make Iron Dome equally effective against them.
The Patriots are the most capable and expensive air defence systems that Ukraine has. Each Patriot battery costs around $1bn (£800m), and each missile costs nearly $4m.
Holding the top position, the United States commands the most potent military force globally. According to Global Firepower, with a Power Index of 0.0712, it demonstrates unparalleled capabilities in defence technologies and armed forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine needs "at least" seven Patriot systems to shield its major cities. He noted that Russia launches an estimated 3,000 missiles, drones, and other projectiles at Ukraine each month.
The Patriot battery at Dhahran failed to track and intercept the Scud missile because of a software problem in the systems weapons control computer. This problem led to an inaccurate tracking calculation that became worse the longer the system operated.
The Army considers a one hour reload time of the Patriot system the minimum standard for effective battlefield readiness. The reload crews from Battery A intend to practice until they have that time chopped in half.
The power and agility of Patriot's radar is also highly resistant to countermeasures, including ECM, radar jamming, and use of RWR equipment. Patriot is capable of quickly changing frequencies to resist jamming.
Ukraine's Patriot Missile Crews Are Shooting Down Russian Jets Faster Than Ever. David Axe writes about ships, planes, tanks, drones and missiles. Russian air force Su-34s release flares.
Although the Patriot has broader coverage, the low cost of UAVs and operational scenarios they would be encountered in would make Iron Dome equally effective against them.
The S-400 Triumph, developed by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau, is the best air defense missile system. The S-400 is a multifunctional system with radar, detection, targeting and anti-aircraft missile capabilities, capable of attacking aircraft and cruise missiles up to a maximum altitude of 56 kilometers.
