  • Question 1:Who can provide details online to open an NRE/NRO savings account?

    Answer:

    Any NRI/PIO/OCI who wants to open an NRE/NRO Savings Bank Account with any branch of State Bank of India.

  • Question 2:Can I convert my existing Resident Indian Savings Bank account with SBI to NRE/NRO Savings Bank account using this online application facility?

    Answer:

    No, you cannot convert your existing Resident Indian Savings Bank account into an NRE/NRO account using this facility.
    However, you can convert your existing account to an NRO account. To convert your account, download a standard request letter by clicking on 'To convert Indian Indian Savings Bank Account to NRO Savings Bank Account on change of residential status of'Download forms'and send/courier it to your home department along with the supporting documents mentioned in the letter. Please note that such an email request cannot be answered for security reasons.

    The NRE account needs to be reopened and can be opened through this facility.

    Answer:

    Yes, you can apply for an account jointly via the Online Account Opening Application, but with a maximum of two applicants.

  • Question 4:Are KYC documents required for all account holders?

    Answer:

    Yes, KYC documents regarding all joint account holders are required.

  • Question 5:Can the KYC documents be different for the joint account holders?

    Answer:

    Yes, provided that everyone submits a set of KYC documents as prescribed by the bank.

  • Question 6:Can a minor provide information online to open a savings account?

    Answer:

    A minor can submit details online to open a savings account, provided he/she is over 10 years old and can sign uniformly.

  • Question 7:Can an account be opened in the name of more than two people?

    Answer:

    Yes, but in such cases you cannot submit the details online. Download the account opening form from our website and manually complete the customer information section for all applicants separately and the combined account information separately. Please send this with all attachments to the desired branch, according to the procedure stated therein.

  • Question 8:Can I apply for a joint account with a person of Indian status through this online application facility?

    Answer:

    Yes, but in such cases you cannot submit the details online. Download the account opening form from our website, fill it in manually and send it with all attachments to the desired branch

  • Question 9:Is there a deadline within which I must send/forward the application after submitting the details online?

    Answer:

    Yes, the application along with the documents for KYC must reach the recommended Global NRI Center (GNC) within 45 days of submitting the details online, otherwise the application will be rejected and you will have to fill it up again.

  • Question 10:Because I need to submit my personal information online. Is it safe?

    Answer:

    Yes, the website and pages where you submit your personal information are secured by VeriSign and the information is encrypted before it is sent.

  • Question 11:I personally visit a branch in India to open an account. Do I need to have signatures confirmed in the application and KYC documents in advance?

    Answer:

    No. In such cases, attestation of signatures in the application and KYC documents is not required by an authorized officer of the SBI Ministry of External Affairs, Notary Public, Indian Embassy or High Commission. Just make sure you have your original documents with you so that the branch official can verify the photocopies.

    Answer:

    You can have the signatures in the application and KYC documents notarized in one of the following ways:

    • Authorized official of the SBI Ministry of Foreign Affairs (plsclick here, to check whether an office in your country is allowed to attest)
    • Applications
    • Indian Embassy or High Commission
  • Question 13:How can I submit my application and documents to the bank?

    Answer:

    You need to send the application and supporting documents for KYC to our processing center Global NRI Center (GNC) in India/courier. The Global NRI Center (GNC) address will be provided in the email sent to you once you complete the registration process.

  • Question 14:Can I submit the account opening application and documents to the bank via email?

    Answer:

    No, the account opening application and documents cannot be submitted to the bank via email.

  • Question 15:Can I submit the documents to any SBI branch in India and not to the Global NRI Center (GNC)?

    Answer:

    We have a large network, but some of our branches do not provide NRI services. You must contact the branch before approaching them to open the account.

  • Question 16:I have forgotten the NCRN (NRI Customer Reference Number) or NARN (NRI Application Reference Number). Can I pick it up?

    Answer:

    Once the NCRN/NARN is generated, it will also be sent to you at the email address you provided. If you deleted that email or the email was not received by you, please re-enter the details and generate a new NCRN/NARN.

  • Question 17:How many days does an account opening application take to be processed?

    Answer:

    • When the bank receives your application, an SMS and email confirming receipt will be sent to the mobile number and email address provided in the application.
    • If any deficiencies are found in the application and/or identification documents during the processing of the application, an SMS and e-mail alert regarding the receipt thereof will be sent to the mobile number and e-mail address provided in the application.
    • If the application and all identification documents are in order, the account will be opened within 3 - 4 working days from the date of receipt of the application. Once the account is opened, you will receive an SMS alert on your mobile number provided in the application. An email with a password-protected attachment containing details about your account and branch will be sent to the email address provided in the request.
  • Question 18:If there are any issues with my application or KYC documents, do I need to complete and submit them again?

    Answer:

    If there are any deficiencies in your application or supporting KYC documents, it will be sent to the home branch as you request in the application, along with an email instruction to you. In that case, please contact your home department and send the corrected or correct application or document to them.

  • Question 19:How many days after account opening will I receive a checkbook, debit card and internet banking details?

    Answer:

    Once the account is opened, you will receive the following deliveries (based on your request in the account opening application):

    • A welcome package containing a personal checkbook and a withdrawal card will be sent to your chosen mailing address for correspondence 7 to 8 business days after the date of account opening.
    • The Internet Banking User ID (INB) will be sent in an SMS to your registered mobile number within 2 to 3 working days from the date of account opening. The access code for the INB facility will be sent separately to your chosen postal address for correspondence, after 7-8 working days from the date of account opening
    • The first ATM card transaction should be done only at the State Bank Group ATM in India to activate your card
    • You can generate your ATM PIN through internet banking by going to the ATM Services section under the e-Services tab. Alternatively, you can collect your PIN from your home branch by going to the branch in person, or you can collect it within 45 days by the account holder's authorized representative with the appropriate Letter of Authority (LOA).   • Question 20:Is it mandatory to send an initial transfer?

    Answer:

    Currently, an initial transfer is not required. But if you are sending a first transfer (cheque/declaration), please draw it in favor of “State Bank of India A/c [applicant name]”.

  • Question 21:Is it mandatory to provide proof of tax residence?

    Answer:

    If your income is taxable in your current country or in another country, it is mandatory to submit tax information as well as proof of tax residence.

  • Question 22:Can I get my application and documents assessed before sending it to SBI?

    Answer:

    Yes, you can have your application and all documents reviewed for preliminary verification before submitting. This is to ensure that your application and all documents
    acceptable or not for opening an account. For review purposes, click "Upload the application and document for preliminary verification" on the account opening website on the online application opening website and proceed as mentioned by uploading the scanned copies of the completed application and all documents. Uploaded documents will be reviewed by the bank and the preliminary verification status will be communicated to you via email. Accordingly, you can ensure that you send your application and supporting documents after making any necessary changes/corrections (if necessary).
