It can continue to work for another two years. It might stop working tomorrow. Or something in between. There is no way to predict exactly how it will behave.

To replace the battery, you must make an appointment at the nearest Apple Store. When the battery status reaches 80%, it is time for replacement.

It is not necessary for the battery to be at 100%, but it must have sufficient charge to demonstrate that it is "working" before sending it in for repair.
If you get it done while you wait in an Apple Store, you don't even have to relax your phone's security restrictions.
But make sure you test the phone thoroughly BEFORE you leave the store!

Use the online form to set it up; I have always used an Apple Store and it was painless and took <1 hour.

The only thing that is almost certain is that it will run out at the most inopportune time and when you need a reliable device the most.
Have it replaced on YOUR schedule instead of the device's.

If Apple hasn't replaced the battery, it's unlikely they'll replace a non-Apple battery with an Apple battery; Third-party repairs void Apple's obligation to support your device.
