Improving suspension components with the right lubricant (2024)

A strut is an integral part of a vehicle's suspension as it supports the vehicle and absorbs shock from bumps, potholes and other disturbances on the road.Minimizing the daily wear and tear on these components ensures they can function when even the worst pothole hits the road.

The survival of these important suspension components depends on the choice of lubricant to ensure trouble-free operation even after the warranty period.Lubrication of the upper insulator and bumperInUsing the correct internal strut/shock oil helps reduce friction, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) in the suspension. Top insulator

OfThe upper isolator acts as a dampening component at the top of the strut/shock mounting location to prevent nuisance noise and vibration from being transmitted through the vehicle chassis. The addition of a lubricant allows the elastomeric and metal components to slide against each other, preventing "stick/slip" noises.

Selecting a grease with good water washability, compatibility with elastomers, and performance across a wide range of temperatures is critical to avoiding warranty returns. Nye suggests usingFluorocarbon gel 880. This high viscosity thickened PTFE silicone grease exhibits excellent water resistance and mechanical stability over a wide temperature range.

Springbumper

An impact bumper provides the ultimate in shock absorption when the suspension experiences extreme compression due to the vehicle hitting a large bump orperforated hole. The addition of synthetic grease to the bumper prevents the driver from making noise when the strut comes into contact with the bumper.

Fluorocarbon Gel 880 is also recommended for this application due to its water leachability, compatibility with elastomers and wide temperature performance. For a non-silicone-basedpossibility,Rheolube® 393, a high viscosity lithium soap thickened synthetic hydrocarbon grease, is recommended.

Binnenveerpoot/chocolate

A strut or shock absorber uses an internal hydraulic oil to lubricate bearings and seals, while providing damping to compensate for disturbances on the road. When a strut or shock absorber is activated, the exchange of oil through the valves slows the action, providing the necessary damping.

Choosing the right oil reduces friction on internal components and allows the strut to function properly over the wide temperature range required in the automotive industry. Nye Lubricants has developed specialist oils, including Nye Synthetic Oil 148G and Nye Synthetic Oil 185D, specifically designed for these types of applications.

FAQs

What is the best lubricant for suspension parts? ›

In conclusion, silicone grease and lithium-based grease are the best options for lubricating rubber suspension bushings due to their excellent lubrication properties and compatibility with rubber.

Does suspension need to be lubricated? ›

You may have heard the term suspension system lubrication and wondered, is this necessary? Just like many other systems in your vehicle, lubrication is necessary to keep parts moving easily and to avoid metal to metal contact.

What grease do I use for my suspension? ›

Re: What type of grease goes on suspension bushes? Basically you want a silicone or PTFE based lubricant. Something that wont wash off with water. Just make sure it's not petroleum based, as they will eat the urethane and cause premature failure.

Is WD 40 good for car suspension? ›

It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't help either. WD-40 was designed to displace water. It's NOT a lubricant, and it doesn't preserve rubber. If you want to help preserve rubber suspension bushings (and CVT boots, and other rubber parts) spray them with automotive silicone.

How can I make my suspension smoother? ›

Suspension softening typically consists of two steps. To begin, you replace the pre-existing shock absorbers with a lighter set. These soft absorbers are primarily designed for comfort. Second, the springs of the vehicle should be replaced with a softer pair — in other words, lower-rated leaf springs.

Can you use silicone lubricant on ball joints? ›

Nye's Fluorocarbon Gel 880 is a PTFE-thickened, heavy viscosity dimethyl silicone grease with excellent water resistance and structural stability under a wide temperature range and is our recommended solution for most ball joint applications.

What fluid is used in suspension systems? ›

Suspension fluids are hydraulic fluids that help to absorb and dampen the forces applied to your car's suspension system while it's in motion. Suspension Fluids are just as important as the mechanical components of your car's suspension system.

What kind of grease do you use on suspension forks? ›

Peaty's suspension grease is a lithium-free grease specifically developed for use in suspension forks, rear shocks and dropper seatposts.

What is the best grease for classic car suspension? ›

Red Rubber Grease

A special rubber compatible grease for use on hydraulic brake and clutch components, where hardening or swelling of rubber must be avoided. Useful in assembly of rubber components for brake, clutch and suspension units.

What is the best grease for ball joints and suspension? ›

Rated for Ball Joints

Mystik Grease is manufactured in the USA and provides an excellent option for chassis, bearings, and articulating suspension parts like tie rod ends and ball joints. The main thing to look for in ball joint grease is staying power.

Can I use WD-40 on my bike suspension? ›

Use of Bike cleaner is fine here but DO NOT JETWASH directly into seals and make sure to thoroughly rinse the cleaning agent off. Our favourite lubricant for refreshing fork seals is WPL ForkBoost. Whatever you use, it should preferably not be an aerosol. Please don't use WD40, GT85 or any similar products!

Does Jiffy Lube work on suspension? ›

WHAT WE DO: After a thorough inspection and analysis of your vehicle's suspension system, Jiffy Lube® provides recommendations for the suspension, including shocks and struts. Shocks and struts are integral components of your vehicle's suspension system.
