CLEVELAND, Ohio - It's a debate fans have been having for a while. It's even come up a few times on "The Walking Dead": What if Shane was still alive?
Fans were not given an answer when askedShane passed awaytowards the end of season 2. His death obviously follows the story in Robert Kirkman's comic. So it wasn't that surprising.
Still, Shane's death catapulted "The Walking Dead" to the top of the ratings universe with an audience of 9 million viewers by the end of Season 2. From that point on, the show would enter double digits and never look back.
“The Walking Dead” has moved on with Norman Reedus, aka Daryl Dixon, taking over as the second lead. Likewise, actor Josh Bernthal, who played Shane, appeared in several films and will play the Punisher in season 2 of Netflix's "Daredevil" series.
But the question of where “The Walking Dead” would be if Shane had lived still lingers. Carol once admitted to Rick that he took the group further than Shane probably could have done. But for the sake of argument, if Shane were still around, here are a few things to think about:
Rick would probably be dead
There's no doubt that the group of survivors would have been stronger if both Rick and Shane were still alive. But that couldn't happen. Shane's love for Lori and the hopelessness of the new world drove him crazy. In the end it would always be him or Rick.
Lori would probably still be alive
Shane was obsessed with Lori, even more than Rick. That doesn't mean Rick was responsible for Lori's death. But he was clearly torn between his love for his wife and the betrayal he felt after finding out she had slept with his best friend. It's likely that Shane would have considered Lori's life more of a priority and made her a doctor or something like that. However, it may have been detrimental to the group.
Carl would be less of a bitch, but that's not a good thing
Shane was right about one thing. Carl was a weak boy. There's no doubt that Rick's sensitive side trickled down to his son. If Shane had killed Rick and taken control of the group and Rick's family, Carl would likely have received more tough love. Still, it probably would have backfired on Shane. Remember that mid-season scene in Season 4 where Carl bears a grudge against an injured Rick? If it was Shane, Carl would have shot him.
The group would fall under a governor's regime
Shane's downfall was similar to the Governor's, only less controlled. The Governor was able to control the madness within him and rule a society with a subtle but iron fist. If Shane had managed to kill Rick and fulfill his desire to be with Lori, that might have given him a reason. But that anger never completely went away. If Carol, Lori, Maggie, Glenn, and the others stayed with Shane, they would probably fall under the "Fall in line or else" rule.
Daryl Dixon would have gone
The relationship between Rick and Daryl is close to that of two brothers. However, Daryl and Shane were never meant to be friends. If Shane had become the leader of the group, Daryl would probably have been in line for a while, much like his time with Joe's group. However, Daryl probably would have been saved in the end and struck out on his own.
There's a chance everyone can be A-Okay
There was a moment before Shane's death where he asked Randall, the group's captive for a few episodes, if he could join his group. Randall is all about it until Shane breaks his neck. But what if Shane meant it and decided to release Randall and follow him to a new path. Maybe Shane could have taken over leadership of that group, found a new Lori, and lived happily ever after. Well, as happily ever after as a world ruled by zombies can be.
