How long will your expensive new iPhone last? (2024)

A common question I get from people who have purchased a new iPhone is, "How long will it last?" For some it is a signal of the huge investment the device represented, while for others it is a sign that they are making plans for the future.

Anyway, it is also a signal that people are aware that technological gadgets do not last forever.

So how long will your new iPhone last?

Unless you break or drop your iPhone, the most likely way it will break is through the battery. And how long it takes for the battery to wear down to the point where it has a dramatic effect on battery life depends on which iPhone you bought and how much you use your new iPhone.

Before I go any further, a quick lesson on lithium-ion batteries.

Batteries are a consumable item. They wear out over time. Get used to this.

Standard alkaline batteries (such as a Duracell or Energizer battery) have a lifespan of one charge cycle: they come charged and you use them once. Rechargeable batteries also have a lifespan. According to Apple, the iPhone battery is "designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity over 500 full charge cycles."

But what is a charging cycle? It is not, as you might initially think, about the number of times you charge your device. It's more complicated than that. Apple explains it this way:

"For example, you can use 75 percent of your battery's capacity one day and then fully charge it overnight. If you use 25 percent the next day, you will have a total of 100 percent discharge, and those two days will add up to one charging cycle. It may take several days to complete a cycle."

Apple doesn't give you a way to find out how many cycles your iPhone's battery has gone through, but it does offer a third-party Mac app calledcoconut batteries 3gives you access to this information.

I tested an iPhone 11 and an iPhone 11 Pro Max in an attempt to find out how long the battery lasts.

If we take the 500 charge cycles as the battery life (which may be a conservative estimate as I have put iPhones through over 800 charge cycles with no ill effects), then we can use the number of charge cycles along with the device's battery life . age to find out how long it will last. Please note that you cannot use the age information provided by coconutBattery as it relates to the date of manufacture of the device and not how long the device has been in use.

I'm a pretty heavy iPhone user and I measured how long it takes to go through a charging cycle of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max, and the results are quite interesting.

On average, a single charging cycle takes me this long:

  • iPhone 11: 1.6 days
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 2.6 days

Now, assuming 20 percent battery wear over the 500 charge cycles, let's reduce each charge cycle by 10 percent to get an average over the 500 cycles.

  • iPhone 11: 1.4 days
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 2.4 days

This means that the time required to reach 500 charge cycles for a large user is as follows:

  • iPhone 11: 720 days (or 2 years)
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max: 1,200 days (or 3.3 years)

So the more you spend on an iPhone, the longer the battery lasts. Why? The capacity of the battery is larger, making each charging cycle longer.

So the more you use, the longer the battery lasts and the longer the period between buying a new iPhone (or sending the device in for a new battery).

Another consideration is capacity. You need to plan how much storage space you need because this is another common reason why people become dissatisfied with their iPhones. This is harder to plan for and depends on how much data you want to move to the cloud (and how much you want to pay for cloud storage).

It seems like I can manage 64GB of storage without much effort, but I'm sorting through old data quite aggressively. If you are a data collector, this won't work for you.

There you go. An iPhone 11 should easily last a few years before the battery becomes an issue, while the chunky iPhone 11 Pro Max should offer a good three-year lifespan.
