Check Mac® performance (2024)

Check the performance of a Mac computer

The easiest way to check system performance on a Mac is to useActivity monitor, a built-in program that gives you a live overview of your Mac's hard drive, RAM, processor, and network usage.

  1. To accessActivity monitorgo toWinner,Application,Utilities. ClickActivity monitor.
  2. Select the process category you want to monitor. You can choose betweenCPU,Memory,Energy,Disk,Network, InCache.
  3. You can then choose how much information you want to display and in what format. For example:
    • All processes
    • All processes hierarchicalThis allows you to see parent/child relationships in processes
    • My processes, processes owned by your macOS® user account
    • System processor, processes owned by macOS
    • Other user processes, processes that are not owned by the root user (the administrator account) or the current user
    • Active processes
    • Inactive processes, processes that sleep
    • Window processes, processes that create a window for user action, usually apps
    • Selected processes, processes you selected in the Activity Monitor window
    • Requests within the last 8 hours, apps running in the last 8 hours.

What to check

If you're looking for a specific performance measure, you can find it, but there are some special things to look out for.

Check the CPU on a Mac

You can sortCPUpanel with a series of columns to see how much of the processor is being used by each application. This information can help identify processes that affect performance. ThatCPU-belastingthe graph shows the percentage of capacity currently used. IfCPU-belastingis consistently above 60%, you may want to check for hidden processes and background processes that are taking up a lot of processor space. Close or remove them if possible.

Check memory on a Mac

OfMemorythe window shows how the memory is being used. ThatMemory pressurethe graph illustrates the availability of memory. If the graph shows a lot of yellow and red, it may be time to increase the amount of RAM in your computer.

Check the energy on a Mac

OfEnergythe window shows both the total energy consumption and the energy consumption of each open app. An important item to look out for are apps that prevent the computer from going to sleepPrevention of sleepcolumn. If you are trying to save power when the computer is not in use, make sure to close the apps that prevent hibernation.

Check the network on a Mac

OfNetworkpanel shows how much data the computer is sending or receiving, broken down by individual applications. If you're tracking how much data you use, this is a good place to see which apps are using the most data.

Monitor performance

If you prefer to monitor performance in real time, you can monitor CPU usage in the background while you work in other applications.

Select to open a windowWindow, AndCPU usage.

If you would like a graph of the information in theWhile, to electDisplay,Dock-pictogram, InCPU usage.

Conclusion

Apple® offers a range of performance monitors iActivity monitor. These monitors allow you to monitor and, if necessary, adjust the performance of your computer.
