Apple iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 14: One is new, the other is not (2024)

Intro

OfiPhone 15-serieLaunched in late 2023 and comes in as Apple's new and greatest. It completely changed the context of how we watchiPhone 14 family, especially since units ofiPhone 14 Prowas phased out and the non-Pro models remained on the shelves at a $100 discount.

So you might be a smart shopper who always buys last year's phone. Let's just say there's still a chance you can find a new old stockiPhone 14 Proor a revised copy. Is it worth getting it or not?iPhone 14better?

MetiPhone 14models, we have a lot of difference between the two classes of devices. The non-Pro editions stuck with the 2021 Apple A15 processor and the old 12MP cameras, while the more expensive models got the A16 and the excellent 48MP camera upgrade. To further widen this gap, the Pro series also continues to hold the 120Hz ProMotion screen hostage. And there is the design facelift where the Pro gets a Dynamic Island, while the cheaper models still have the good old notch.

If you find a good discount fromiPhone 14 Proendorsem*nt deals, it's probably better to go after it. It has a newer processor, a much-needed camera upgrade, and a 120Hz display, so you'll have the more modern device for years to come. Anyway, if you don't care about those specs, here's a more in-depth comparison of these two phones:

Design and display quality

Same screens, but one is smoother

BothiPhone 14IniPhone 14 Prohave similar dimensions and both have the same screen size of 6.1 inches. They're OLED panels, built to Apple's specs, but - as we know - the Pro has a 120Hz refresh rate for super-smooth animations, while the non-Pro sticks to 60Hz. The latter is quite low-ball, since by 2024 even mid-range smartphones will be delivered with at least 90 Hz.

A big thing here is thatiPhone 14 Progot rid of the dreaded Notch. Well, sort of - it now has a pill-shaped cutout or "holes" for the Face ID array. But Apple has cleverly built a new interface element around that hole. It's called "Dynamic Island" and basically features fixed widgets and other informational panels around the "Island" to make it look like an intentional part of the software.

Does it improve the experience compared to the classic Notch? Um... maybe in the sense that you get some extra widgets for multitasking. But there's still a camera cutout at the top center of the screen so you can eat your content. Naturally, we expect to see the same divide between tech fans as before: some will hate it, others won't mind.

OfiPhone 14sticks with the slim notch, the same shape we were looking atiPhone 13.

Another difference is the addition of an always-on display - theiPhone 14The Pro's LTPO screen can go all the way down to a 1Hz refresh rate. Apple has included Always-On functionality in iOS, which allows you to see a toned-down version of your wallpaper, clock, notifications, and even active widgets on it. Non-professional iPhones still don't have that feature, and probably won't for a while.

Again, sinceiPhone 14When using the old OLED panels, it doesn't have the physical ability to slow down the refresh rate, so there's no Always-on display. Otherwise the battery would melt very quickly.

It is different

Apple iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 14: One is new, the other is not (4)

Always visible on iPhone 14 Pro

BothiPhone 14and 14 Pro has the flat sides, as before, and of course a glass back. Again, the difference here is thatiPhone 14has a matte aluminum frame and a glossy back, while the Pro has a glossy stainless steel frame and a matte glass back. What this translates to is: a sticky gripiPhone 14, but more fingerprints and a smoother 14 Pro that doesn't show as much grease on the back panel (the stainless steel does).

As usual, both models are IP68 water and dust resistant and have a Lightning port for charging and data transfer.possibly for the last time.

At the back we see the square camera module on both phones. It's clear thatiPhone 14has just two lenses there, while the Pro has its stove-like trio and a black LiDAR camera to boot. The Pro's module is noticeably larger than before (again a year in a row) and certainly makes a striking impression at first glance.

But for all intents and purposes, both phones look and feel unmistakably iPhone. It's up to you to decide if you want a brighter, more colorful and more fun oneiPhone 14, or a more serious oneiPhone 14 Pro, with a stronger build and more muted, mature colors. Even the exciting Deep Purple color for the Pro line turned out to be a bit dark and subtle.

Until now, the main iPhone models launched together have always had the same chipset - Apple prides itself on bringing the Pro performance value to cheaper models. But for the first time everiPhone 14stuck with the old Apple A15 Bionic (the 2021 chip), with a small upgrade - it has an extra GPU core.

OfiPhone 14 Prohas received the right update: the new Apple A16 Bionic, built on a 4 nm process with a nice improvement in performance and energy efficiency.

To be clear, the A15 Bionic is still an excellent chip with a lot of juice left in it. But we're scratching our heads as to why you would buy itiPhone 14instead of going for the cheaper and very similar,iPhone 13. Or hey, even thoseiPhone 12, which is still running well. 14 Pro - now that's a more justified purchase with the extra performance and camera upgrades (next).

One small step for the Pro, no leap for the non-Pro

Another point where the two differ is the camera module. Apple has a shiny new 48MP sensor that fits under the wide-angle lensiPhone 14 Pro. By default, pixels are merged into groups of 4 to produce 12MP images, just like before, but with much better light sensitivity and less noise. Shooting ProRAW allows you to take 48MP photos for extra fine detail that look great, but you'll need some knowledge to actually edit them in post.

OfiPhone 14sticking with the same old 12MP sensor we're so familiar with. While certainly good, it generally lags behind the competition in 2024. But does the Pro make good use of that 48MP sensor? Let's look at a few examples:

We can see quite a bit of sharpening being done by both phones. OfiPhone 14, it's clear that the phone didn't have much data to work with - at least when we compare the images right next to those of the 14 Pro. The latter has much more definition in the textures of finer shapes and stripes (look at the umbrella in sample 2 or the disco ball in sample 3). But apart from the pixels, we can say that the images are very similar in terms of colors and dynamics.

OfiPhone 14 Proshines when you shoot in ProRAW, which captures excellent detail. But you need to know how to edit RAW and dealing with highly dynamic scenes is not an easy task. Anyway, here's whatiPhone 14 Procan do in automatic and in ProRAW (scenes cropped for better visibility of details):

< Cropped 12 MP JPEGCropped 48 MP ProRAW file >

< Cropped 12 MP JPEGCropped 48 MP ProRAW file >

NaturallyiPhone 14 Proalso has a telephoto lens with 3x relative zoom, which makes for a great portrait camera. But we also get access to a new 2x zoom option: Apple uses that 48 MP sensor to step in and give you a 2x step of improved quality. ThatiPhone 14only zooms in by digitally cropping an image. And of course the results are clear: the Pro has a much higher quality zoom lens:

The ultra-wide camera oniPhone 14 Prois also slightly better, with a slightly wider aperture (F2.2 versus F2.4) and what appears to be slightly better lens construction. Plus, it works like onehigh resolution macro camerathanks to autofocus. In any case, Apple cited huge improvements for the Pro's ultrawide, especially at night. Shall we?

The very first scene shows us no difference in handling the dynamics: the bottom of the umbrella is dark for both cameras. But the ultra-wide 14 Pro has sharper details there. The sky in the 14 Pro image is also a much more natural shade of blue. In the second scene we see more sound seeping iniPhone 14's ultra-wide, and also more flowery and unnatural lighting around the colored lights and neon. The third shot is more challenging and both ultrawide cameras become softer and darker, but the 14 Pro held up a little better. So yeah, that oneiPhone 14 Prohas a slightly better ultra-wide camera thaniPhone 14.

And of courseiPhone 14 Prowill have the LiDAR sensor that helps in virtual measurements of the real world. The rulers app is more accurate, AR apps can take advantage of it, etc. It's been on iPhones since the 12 series, but we still haven't seen a major breakthrough with it, so we can't say it's a is a strong sales pitch.

Sound quality and haptics

Apple has been at the forefront of sound and haptics on iPhones for years. Usually the Max models get the best sound, which is easily explained by the fact that they provide more acoustic space for the speakers. ButiPhone 14IniPhone 14 ProThey certainly produce a great sound, especially considering their size. They are plenty loud and provide a crystal clear listening experience, whether talking head videos or soundtracks.

As far as haptics go, the Taptic engine on the iPhones does a great job, and yes – these phones snap, click and vibrate with satisfying precision.

Battery life and charging

Consistency is key

Apple always strives for this "All Day Battery Life" - about 10 hours of mixed use and tons of standby durability is what you get from an iPhone. And we expected nothing lessiPhone 14serie.

According to Apple figuresiPhone 14can play streamed video for 16 hours straightiPhone 14 ProDoing the same thing for 20 hours, which is a big difference in performance. interesting enoughiPhone 14has a 3,279 mAh battery, while theiPhone 14 Prohas a capacity of 3,700 mAh. Needless to say, we put them through our tests:

It is different

So we see a much smaller difference here. When it comes to browsing or video, that is indeed the caseiPhone 14 Procan last a little longer, probably thanks to the efficiency of the 4nm A16 Bionic. But when it comes to gaming, that 120Hz screen certainly takes its toll, and the Pro's endurance falls far short of whatiPhone 14is able to.

BothiPhone 14IniPhone 14 Prosupports 20W fast charging, which should charge from 0% to 50% in around 30 minutes, according to official figures.

Summary and final verdict

Apple iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 14: One is new, the other is not (8)

So no surprise hereiPhone 14 Prois the clear winner: it's more powerful, has more new features to get excited about and feels like the real new phone. Anyone who desires itiPhone 14You can just save a few crowns and go for a cheaper oneiPhone 13instead of. TheiPhone 14is more of a retread of old ground, while the Pro actually adds some new features, a much-needed camera upgrade (and impressive ProRAW performance), and a new user experience with Dynamic Island.

Are these new features worth an extra $200? Maybe, maybe not, but then we have the other features exclusive to the Pro line – 120Hz displays, a telephoto camera for stunning portraits, 4K ProRes video recording – bridging the gap between Pro iPhones and non-pros has become bigger. And for the first time in a long time, that price increase seems to be worth it. Or is it simply because it is normaliPhone 14didn't bring much to the table?
