Hey guys,
My girlfriend has an iPhone 4 that she has been having a lot of problems with lately. I will restore it but I won't update it to iOS 6 yet. Instead of restoring through iTunes if I restore through settings>general>"reset settings and erase all content" it will restore the phone WITHOUT updating it to iOS 6? Please let me know. Thank you ð

Resetting settings and deleting all content will NOT update your iPhone to iOS 6

If you erase all content and settings, the phone will not be restored at all. What you do is exactly what that setting says: you delete all content and settings and no, this does not update or change iOS.
This is generally not considered a troubleshooting step.

That was my second question. So deleting all content and settings will not refresh the system as a restore would?

actually her iPhone 4 has stuttering and freezing issues. When she's on a call, she can't do anything (while she's on a call) or the iPhone will freeze. Sometimes it freezes for many seconds when you open your camera, or just opens with a black screen. Would resetting through settings and clearing everything help? Because I don't really want to put iOS6 on her iPhone 4 for fear of even more slowdowns or battery issues.

It's doubtful it will do anything other than wipe the phone. Try resetting her phone: Press the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time, hold until you see the Apple logo, then let go. If nothing changes, your next step is to restore from a backup.

I'm afraid that any software errors or problems may also appear in the backup. So I thought about transferring the apps and purchases, restoring to new and then syncing the apps and purchases with it again.

That would be the final troubleshooting step...restoring it like new. However, this will update iOS to iOS 6.1.

Okay, my biggest problem is that I've heard of battery drain issues with iOS 6 in particular on the iP4. Do you know how widespread battery problems are?

Well, millions of users are updating and have updated to iOS 6.1 without any problems. Personally, I don't know anyone who has experienced any problems.

There are more than 300,000,000 devices running iOS 6.

I've never had a battery or WiFi issue on any of my 3 devices running iOS 6+. We cannot predict what your experience will be.
cheers

I understand that my chances of getting into trouble are very slim. But articles like the one below make me nervous because when I update and have problems, Apple won't let me downgrade, meaning we're stuck with bad battery life and literally no way to fix it. Not a position I want to be in. I understand that the internet can blow things out of proportion, but still.
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2012/100212-iphone-battery-262963.html
I understand the article is referring to 6.0, but most of what I've read says people with battery issues haven't seen it improve with 6.1. That's why I was hoping to see some statistics on those affected. I just hated pulling the trigger and draining her battery every afternoon. Just because 300 million people use iOS 6 doesn't mean 300 million people use it smoothly. Any number of them could have issues, but you would never know because thanks to Apple you CANNOT downgrade.

We can't really add anything more to it. Restoring will install iOS 6.1 on the phone. Will you have any problems... doubtful.
Succes.

Does iOS update with âreset and delete all contentâ?
