The Samsung March 2023 update is rolling out to these Galaxy devices (1)

The month of March has arrived and that means spring is almost here. It also means it's time for Samsung to roll out the March 2023 security patch to its many Galaxy phones - here's the full list of devices with the update.

Samsung March 2023 Security Update - Here's what's new

The basis for the monthly security update is the General Android Security Bulletin, created by Google and used by Samsung and all other Android device manufacturers. On March 1, 2023Android security bulletincontains solutions to 26 issues, including two marked 'Critical', as well as last month's solutionsBulletin February 5, 2023.

From there,Samsung adds solutionsfor issues specific to Galaxy phones. This month there are 23 such problems, including at least two of "high" difficulty. One such issue within the Galaxy Themes Service allowed access to protected files on a device.

When you install the March 2023 Update, your Galaxy phone will also provide a brief description of what changed in the update, which may vary slightly from device to device.

  • The overall stability of functions improved.
  • The security of your device has been improved.

Update:For owners of Galaxy devices with Exynos chips, the March 2023 security update is particularly crucial. Google's Project Zero reported a major flaw in Exynos modems that could allow attackers to run malicious code on your device if you have Wi-Fi calling or VoLTE enabled.

  • Google: Disable VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling Due to Serious Exynos Modem Vulnerabilities on Pixel 6, More

Samsung has since shared that the March 2023 update will fix many of the issues (although perhaps not all). If you own a Samsung Galaxy device with an Exynos chip, make sure you install the March update as soon as possible. In the meantime, if your device has not received the March update or later, we recommend that you disable Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE to stay safe.

We could also see more devices upgraded to One UI 5.1 with this month's patch, with most premium devices getting the new OS with the February update.

Devices with the Samsung Security Update of March 2023

While there's no set order in which Samsung updates its devices, you can usually see which phones get priority over others. Normally, a new month's update hits flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Z phones first, usually in order of release, with newer devices getting faster patches. From there, things generally progress to the Galaxy Note series (now discontinued), the affordable Galaxy A/M/F series, and the Galaxy Tab series.

Again, this is just a loose timeline though and there have been instances where the Galaxy A series has been updated significantly faster than flagship models. The best way to be sure is to check if your device is in our lists below.

This list includes a note on where the update first debuted and whether it is also available in the US. As usual, the newest additions are highlightedmarked.

Galaxy S-serie

For years, the Samsung Galaxy S series has been the essential choice for anyone looking for a flagship Android phone. Despite the higher cost and incredible popularity, Samsung tends to roll out updates for the Galaxy S series much faster than its other devices.

As if deliberately following the ideal sequence, Samsung rolled out updates to its four latest generations of Galaxy S phones on March 7, the same day Google formally presented its March 2023 security bulletin. First up was the Galaxy S23 series that was released earlier this yearleads the packfor the March update.

Minutes later, similar patches arrived for SamsungGalaxy S22-serieInGalaxy S21queue up. The Galaxy S20 trio had one patched at the timea few hours later. For now, these updates are only available outside the US, but that should change in the coming days.

Following13. mars, the company rolled out the patch to the Galaxy S10 series, with the specific series now only receiving quarterly updates. After a few quiet weeks, things improved again with the Galaxy S series27. mars, where the Galaxy S21 FE is being updated in many parts of the world.

A few days laterFrom March 2023, the Galaxy S23 series received another patch, mainly focused on improvements to the camera.

Galaxy Z Flip/Fold-serie

The Samsung March 2023 update is rolling out to these Galaxy devices (3)

Samsung's new "flagship" experiences, the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold lines of foldable phones, are an incredible showcase for mobile technology. Given their premium price tags, it's no surprise that Samsung updates these devices almost as quickly as the Galaxy S series.

Samsung has kicked off foldable devices, rolling out simultaneous updates to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 416. mars. As with the previous generation of foldables, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 were only a day behind17. mars. Following22. mars, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 picked up its update in both the US and Europe.

Galaxy Note-serie

Although the Galaxy Note phone line has formally ended, the spirit of these devices lives on as Samsung brings the S Pen accessory to more phones and tablets. The Galaxy Note phones themselves also live on, and Samsung continues to support those who own the premium, stylus-equipped Androids.

The last Galaxy Note devices that received monthly updates, the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, were both patched on March 15. Since the previous generation Galaxy Note 10 now gets quarterly updates and was last patched in January, we've probably won. I don't see any other updates for this series this month.

  • Galaxy Note 20 / Note 20 Ultra – N98xU1UES3HWB7 (first released in US)
    • US: Available on locked and unlocked devices

Galaxy A/M/F-serie

In addition to the company's portfolio of premium devices, Samsung is also a prolific producer of both mid-range and affordable Android phones in the Galaxy A, M and F series. Despite not having the same retail prices as a flagship phone, Samsung still does its best to keep its less premium phones up to date.

In addition to the March 2023 security update, many of these more affordable Samsung phones also received an upgrade to One UI 5.1.

One of Samsung's affordable devices was the Galaxy A53first in lineto receive the latest software update. Next one20th of March, was the Galaxy A51, which was simultaneously updated to One UI 5.1.

The update train continued21 March, which brings an update to the Galaxy A52s, while the phone's predecessor, the Galaxy A52 5G, has been patchedthe next day. Despite a quarterly update schedule, the Galaxy A13 was updated22. mars, just two months after the previous patch.

Meanwhile, the recently launched Galaxy A14 has picked up this month's security improvementsMarch 24plus an update to One UI 5.1. As for the Galaxy A01, this outdated 2019 smartphone is still getting updates and getting the latest patch28th of March. The newer Galaxy A04s has been brought to One UI 5.131. mars.

As our first entry into the Galaxy F series this month, the India-exclusive Galaxy F62 received the security enhancements and One UI 5.1 on31. mars.

Even after the month of March ended, Samsung continued to roll out that month's patch to more devices given the severity of the issues fixed. On3 april, the Galaxy A33 has downloaded the March patch and is protected from Exynos-related bugs (mentioned at the top of this post).

Galaxy Tab-serie

In addition to the many phones that Samsung produces, the company also makes excellent Android tablets in the Galaxy Tab series. A major drawback, however, is that Samsung does not offer the same monthly schedule for its tablets. Instead, the Galaxy Tab series will start with quarterly updates before eventually transitioning to semi-annual support.

It's no surprise that only two Galaxy Tabs were updated this month. On22. marsSamsung has rolled out a patch for the Galaxy Tab S7 series. Meanwhile, the 2019 Galaxy Tab S6 has picked up the latest monthly patch28th of March.
