Michael Scott (aka Regional Manager) manages the Scranton office. He is often considered a "cool" boss by Dunder Mifflin employees. He is often the butt of everyone's jokes. Michael continually tries to balance his work life with his social life by inviting Dunder Mifflin employees to come over or get coffee. He has a strong hatred for Toby in HR and often 'bullies' him. Michael likes to be the center of attention and can be very selfish. Michael is forced to share his "throne" as regional manager when Jim becomes co-manager. Michael's dream is to have children of his own. He has an on-and-off relationship with Jan Levenson (his former boss) until they break up for good and Michael meets Holly. Later, in season 7, Michael moves to Colorado to live with Holly, who leaves the office to several new regional managers.
Dwight K. Shrute (a salesman) is seen in the series as Michael's right-hand man. He would do anything for Michael. Michael doesn't appreciate Dwight as much as he should. Dwight's nemesis is Jim Halpert. He always tries to get a gym. Jim throws e.g. a snowball to Dwight, and then Dwight takes revenge by terrorizing Jim. He builds snowmen in the parking lot, then comes out and bombards Jim with snowballs. Dwight runs a beet farm and a bed & breakfast together with his brother Moes. Dwight can be described as a self-centered nerd. It has always been Dwight's desire to become a Regional Manager. During Michael's administration he holds the title of "Assistant to Regional Manager". To the Dwights' delight, this title soon changed to "Assistant Regional Manager". Dwight becomes interim regional manager after Michael leaves. This title is taken away from him when he accidentally fires his gun in the office. Dwight is in love with Angela, whom he later marries in the series finale.
Jim Halpert (a salesman at Dunder Mifflin) is often tired of his job. He has little work and is very creative. He has a charming personality. He loves Pam, an engaged woman with whom he later marries and has two children. He initially moves branches because he wants to get away from Pam. As previously described, Jim is enemies with Dwight Shrute. He also likes to joke.
Pam Beesly is the office receptionist (later became a salesperson). She is initially engaged to Roy (for 3 years) and then marries Jim. Pam is known as the "office hottie". She dreams of becoming an artist and even goes to school at the Pratt Institute to do so. Jim is much more accepting of her ambitions than Roy. Pam has two children; CeCe and Philip. She starts off as a meek and passive character and becomes an assertive character.
Toby Flenderson is a human resources representative for the Scranton division of paper distributor Dunder Mifflin/Sabre. Toby is so soft-spoken that he is physically unable to express his opinion or stand up for himself. Toby can be somewhat wistful about his life choices (he ended up in the HR world after abandoning his seminary education to pursue the woman he would later marry and painfully divorce). He likes his colleagues, although he is sometimes irritated by the overly talkative Kelly Kapoor. He also has a long-term crush on Pam Halpert, which he almost reveals at the end of season 4 when he quits his job to move to Costa Rica. Toby was intensely despised by branch manager Michael Scott, mainly because Michael had no authority over him when Toby reported to the company's headquarters, and because Toby often tried to dissuade Michael from many of his ill-conceived and impulsive ideas. Michael sums up his feelings for Toby in the episode "Casino Night" and asks, "Why are you the way you are? Honestly, every time I try to do something fun or exciting, you don't do it like that. I hate it. " it's so bad when they're things you choose to be." At Toby's farewell party in "Goodbye Toby", Michael hands him a rock with a note attached to it "Suck on This!" Shortly after arriving in Costa Rica, Toby receives a zipline accident, and midway through season 5 he returns to his old job at Dunder Mifflin, much to Michael's anger.
