Today marks 10 years since Appleintroduced the iPhone 5featuring an all-new Lightning connector that replaced the previous 30-pin dock connector that originally shipped with the iPod. Apple's former chief marketing officer Phil Schiller described Lightning as a "modern connection for the next decade," and that milestone has now been reached.

iPhone 14 models will continue to feature a Lightning connector, but Apple is generally expected to do so as wellswitch to USB-C for iPhone 15 modelsnext year.

Apple already offers USB-C ports on every Mac and almost every iPad it sells, along with the Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, some Beats headphones, and a few other accessories. Rumors suggest that the upcoming 10th generation entry-level iPadwill also use USB-C, followed byAirPods charging caseand next year the MagSafe battery pack.

In June, the EU announced that it had reached agreement on the introduction of a new lawwould make USB-C the common charging portby fall 2024 on all new smartphones, tablets, headphones and many other electronics. The iPhone 15 models are expected to hit the market around September 2023, ahead of the EU deadline.

While the Lightning cable was the first reversible charging cable, USB-C has become a very popular charging standard for a wide range of devices. A major benefit of USB-C for iPhone is faster data transfer speeds, as Lightning on iPhone 13 and earlier reaches 480 Mbps, while USB-C can achieve up to 5 to 10 Gbps depending on the specification, or even up to 480 Mbps. 40 Gbps if iPhone supports Thunderbolt 3.

The best thing about lightning is that it is reversible and easy to connect. Unlike, for example, all USB plugs up to and including C.

Definitely a big improvement over the 30-pin connector, but I wish Apple had waited a little longer in 2012 and put a USB-C port on the iPhone right away.

The biggest disappointment of the 14 series is the lack of USB-C!

Let's have ProRes video and 48 Megapixel cameras, but keep the 10 year old IO. Brilliant!

That said, the 13 pro isn't terrible in terms of IO, but I notice how much faster my iPad mini 6 is in terms of bulk copy activity through the physical port.

Still love Lightening and its mechanical robustness for phones. Perfect for its intended purpose, many thousands of additions will occur in imperfect environments during its lifespan.

Good. Time for retirement.

Lightning was a HUGE improvement over 30-pin and mini-USB, but it's time to move to USB-C. In some ways Lightning may still be superior to USB-C, but the market has spoken.

I love USB-C to connect my computer to four monitors, disk drives, flight yoke/throttle, Stream Deck, etc.I can connect/disconnect themhighesta dozen times (probably less) a year. The amount of bandwidth available to monitors and drives is critical.

My iPhone is a completely different story. Somehow I managed to cope and survive not being able to transfer data to/from the computer at multi-gigabit/sec speeds. I appreciate the mechanical robustness of the plugs and jacks when it's time to charge.
