Pigs include domestic pigs and their ancestor, the common Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa), along with other species. The familyShecurrently contains eight living species: Palawan warty pig, Bornean warty pig, Visayan warty pig, Celebes warty pig, Oliver's warty pig, Philippine warty pig, wild boar and Javanese warty pig.
There are also a number of extinct species, such as the early Pleistocene in China.
Do you sweat like a pig? Probably not, especially if you can wring out your shirt at the end of a hot day. Contrary to popular belief, pigs cannot sweat; instead, they wallow in the mud to cool off. Because of their muddy appearance, pigs get an undeserved reputation for being untidy. In fact, pigs are among the cleanest animals around, refusing to shed anywhere near their living or dining areas if given the choice.
Pigs are misunderstood in many ways. Many people consider them corny and stupid, but the NATURE programThe pleasure of pigsshows us how intelligent pigs really are. (They're also skinny, of course, unless they're overfed by humans.) Pigs are smarter than any other farm animal. Their ability to solve problems where pig I.Q. test onThe pleasure of pigs, is well documented and considered by animal experts to be more trainable than dogs or cats.
Pigs are difficult to classify. In popular culture, they appear in all forms, from cute simpletons (CHARLOTTE'S WEB) to evil tyrants (ANIMAL FARM) to brave heroes (BABE). For pig farmers, the animal is a commodity. For truffle harvesters, pigs are reliable hunters, whose keen sense of smell locates these expensive mushrooms. To scientists, pigs are unique because they are one of the few large mammals found in some form in all parts of the world.
Every continent bears the sign of the pig's feet - preferably in a beautiful mud puddle. Red river pigs in West Africa, bearded pigs in Borneo, pig-like peccaries in Bolivia and Indonesian babirusa with bizarre tusks all enjoy a similar lifestyle of food, water and a good roll in the mud. The European ancestors of these pigs were among the first domesticated animals thousands of years ago. Wherever people have ventured, they have taken pigs with them. Colonists carried pigs to distant lands and spread pig farming around the world.
Pig farming is big business in the United States. In 1997 alone, American pig farmers raised more than 58 million animals to support the growing demand for pork. But the popularity of pigs as pets is growing, and many Americans now keep pigs in their homes. So when dinner is served in those houses, it is made for a pig, not one!
