From the bottom to the top:

  • Bottom bun.
  • First optional condiment.Divide your condiments (mustard, ketchup, mayo, etc.) between the top and bottom buns. This preserves their signature flavor, prevents an abundance of mess that will drip and splatter as you eat, and creates a sort of "mortar" on the top and bottom that helps keep the toppings in place.   • Salat.Due to its placement on top of the bun, the lettuce acts as a shield, preventing the patty's juices from seeping into it and making it soggy. Not allowing the lettuce to come into direct contact with the hot patty also prevents it from wilting, which helps maintain its crispness.
  • Tomato.Slippery vegetables such as lettuce and tomatoes are best placed under the burger and are less likely to slip when used as a base than when sitting on top of the burger. Place half your toppings on the bottom of the burger and the other half on top, so the burger doesn't become top-heavy and therefore unstable, while the weight of the patty and the texture of the bottom will help keep the tomato in place.
