If you have color blindness (also called colourblindness), it means that you cannot see certain colors as most people do – or that you cannot see colors at all.
Contact your ophthalmologist if color vision deficiency runs in your family, or if you think you or your child may have color vision deficiency. They can give you or your child a simple vision test to check whether there is a color vision deficiency.
Your ophthalmologist can determine if you have color vision deficiency using a test called a color plate test. If the results are not clear, your ophthalmologist may perform other tests. You don't have to wait for your test results; Your ophthalmologist can tell you if you have color vision deficiency as soon as you take the tests.
Color plate test
This is the most common type of color vision deficiency test. During this test, your ophthalmologist will ask you to look at a circle made up of many different colored dots. Inside the circle is a shape that also consists of dots, such as a number, a letter or a twisted line. If the shape blends into the background and you can't see it, you may have a form of color vision disorder. Different color plates can control different types of colorsvisual impairment.
Anomaloskop-test
This test checks whether you can match the brightness of 2 lamps. During this test you look through an eyepiece at 2 lamps with different brightness levels. You have to use buttons to adjust the lights and try to make them match. If you can't match the brightness of the two lights, you may have colorvisual impairment.
Tint-test
In a hue test you get blocks of different colors. Your ophthalmologist will ask you to arrange them in rainbow order: from red to purple. If you have trouble placing the colors in the correct order, you may be experiencing a form of color vision disorder. Ophthalmologists often use this test for people who need very accurate color vision for their work -as graphic designers.
