Smartphones with the longest battery life (2024)

Smartphones with the longest battery life (1)

The new year is shaping up to be a big one for long-lasting handsets, as new releases keep appearing on our list of the best phone batteries. All three new Samsung devices are included, as well as some OnePlus phones. And it's all powered by the longest-lasting phone we've ever tested.

This influx of long-lasting phones makes it harder than ever to get a spot in this guide to the best phone battery life. A phone must last more than 13 hours during the battery test we run on every phone to have a chance of making it into the top 15 phones.

Still, some devices manage to go beyond 12 hours. Take the ROG Phone 8 Pro, which currently tops our list. It's followed by the OnePlus 12R, an impressive mid-range device that doesn't require you to pay for exceptional battery life.

Smartphones with the longest battery life (2)

Our battery life rankings include handsets available in a wide range of prices. The top two slots may be occupied by expensive gaming phones, but you'll find all kinds of entries, some costing less than $300. You don't have to spend a lot of money for a phone with a long battery life.

In our tailor-made battery test, we let phones surf the Internet continuously5Guntil they run out of juice. We set the phone screen to a brightness of 150 nits to ensure comparable results. And if the phone has a high refresh rate screen, we'll test several times with that feature on and off to get an idea of the battery life you can expect.

The average phone lasts about 10 hours, so anything above that gives you solid battery life. But to earn a spot on the list of the best phone battery life, you'll have to go past 13 hours. We're actually talking about phones that offer the kind of endurance where you're less dependent on one of our phonesbest portable chargerchooses.

The phones listed here have been tested within the last 18 months, although four of the five longest-lasting devices have been released since the start of this year. Asus, OnePlus and Samsung have the most phones on our list with three each. (All three new Galaxy S24 models made the list.) Apple and newcomer Nothing is trailing closely behind, as several of their phones qualify.

Here are the best players we've tested over the past year and a half.

The best phone battery life of 2024

Smartphones with the longest battery life (3)

1. Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro (18:48)

Asus actually uses a smaller battery in the ROG Phone 8 Pro than in the previous version of its gaming phone. But don't worry: the ROG Phone 8 Pro still sets a new standard for our battery test by lasting just 19 hours.

The ROG Phone 8 Pro's time was 16 minutes better than the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate - not only Asus' previous gaming phone, but also the last phone to set a new record in our battery test. Buy a gaming phone from Asus and you'll never have to worry about running out of power in the middle of a game again.

A 65W charger included with the ROG Phone 8 Pro managed to get a dead phone to 71% charge after 30 minutes of charging. After 50 minutes the phone was fully charged. So you'll never really lose your game with this durable phone from Asus by your side. The phone will go on sale in February.

2. OnePlus 12R (18:42)

The mid-range OnePlus 12R is the longest-lasting phone we tested that isn't built specifically for gaming. Thanks to a fat 5,500mAh battery, this phone will last all day and then some on a single charge, but credit also goes to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which powers many of the other devices on our list of the best power the phone's battery life.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 may be an older chipset, but this is what allows OnePlus to offer the 12R at such a low price, especially in the US. You can buy a $499 model with 128GB of storage in the US, while the OnePlus 12R starts at $599 for 256GB of storage in other parts of the world.

Even with its lower price, the OnePlus 12R doesn't skimp on OnePlus' signature fast charging. With 80W wired charging speeds in the US, we got the phone to 96% charge after 30 minutes. Don't expect wireless charging, though.

3. Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate (18:32)

Last year's battery champion remains a legend with a long history, as the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate lasted 18.5 hours on a charge. Credit goes to the device's 6,000 mAh battery and the energy-efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that powers the phone. Fast charging of 65 W ensures that you can quickly recharge the battery.

You'll probably want the newer ROG Phone 8 Pro if you want a long-lasting device for gaming. However, if you can find this older model at a significant discount, the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is a good alternative.

4. OnePlus 12 (17:41)

The cheaper OnePlus 12R may be the more durable phone in the OnePlus 12 range, but it doesn't sell the flagship phone short. The OnePlus 12 still lasted over 17.5 hours on our battery test with a 5,400mAh battery and the power management features of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 silicon. We've had that time with the phone's adaptive display enabled, so you can enjoy faster refresh rates without worrying about this feature draining your battery.

Unlike the OnePlus 12R, the OnePlus 12 offers wireless charging, which is a welcome return to OnePlus' flagships. Wired charging supports speeds of 80W in the US, compared to wireless speeds of 50W.

5. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (16:45 uur)

Meet the longest-lasting flagship phone we've ever tested. The Galaxy S24 Ultra finished 15 minutes under 17 hours, beating last year's Motorola flagship by almost an hour. The S24 Ultra's performance is 2.5 hours better than Apple's latest flagships, which are no slouch when it comes to longevity on a charge.

Samsung has not increased the battery size in the Galaxy S24 Ultra: it remains at 5,000 mAh. So, we have to thank the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset that powers the phone for its excellent performance. It's also worth noting that we recorded that time with the S24 Ultra's adaptive refresh rate enabled, so the Qualcomm chipset does a good job of power management.

Charging speeds remain at 45W, but we managed to get a 71% charge after 30 minutes using a 45W USB-C charger. Samsung doesn't include such a charger with its phone, so if you If you want top charging speeds, you will have to purchase this accessory yourself.

Smartphones with the longest battery life (8)

6. Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus (16:32)

The Galaxy S24 Plus can last almost as long on a charge as the slightly larger Galaxy S24 Ultra, missing the Ultra's time on our battery test by just 13 minutes. That's an excellent result for a phone with a 4,900 mAh battery and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. (At least in North America - S24 Plus models in the rest of the world use Exynos 2400 silicon.)

Charging speeds haven't changed from the Galaxy S23 Plus, as the S24 Plus charges using the 45W cable. Using a compatible charger, we charged an empty Galaxy S24 Plus to 72% in 30 minutes, similar to what we saw with the S24 Ultra.

7. Motorola Rand Plus 2023 (15:47)

We're never surprised when a Motorola phone does well in our battery tests. Many of the phone manufacturer's devices are on this list of best phone batteries. Still, the Motorola Edge Plus 2023 raised a few eyebrows with its time of 15 hours and 47 minutes. We got that result when the phone's 6.7-inch screen was set to an auto-refresh rate, meaning it can scale up to 120Hz as screen activity dictates.

But the Edge Plus supports an even higher refresh rate of 165 Hz, which will appeal to gamers who crave immersive graphics. When we pegged the phone's refresh rate at 165Hz, the Motorola Edge Plus still lasted more than 13 hours in our test, so it would still be among the longest-lasting phones we tested. The Motorola Edge Plus also has 68W wired charging to complement the massive 5,100mAh battery. In practice we weren't impressed with the charging speed, but it's one of the few disappointments we experienced when testing this excellent flagship.

8. Intel Telefoon 2a (15:00)

The cheaper of Nothing's latest phones benefits from a 5,000mAh battery and a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset, delivering an impressive runtime on our battery test of exactly 15 hours. We achieved that result with the screen refresh rate set to high, so you don't have to worry about this feature shortening battery life.

Eastern charging is something you won't normally find on cheaper phones, and yet the Nothing Phone 2a can charge at 45W with a wired connection. For under $350, that's an impressive set of power management features – assuming you can get your hands on the Nothing Phone 2a, as US availability is limited.

9. No Phone 2 (14:21)

The Nothing Phone 2 is much easier to obtain than the Nothing Phone 2a, and you don't lose much in terms of longevity. Equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset and a 4,385mAh battery, the Nothing Phone 2 lasted 14 hours and 21 minutes on our battery test, surpassing devices powered by newer Qualcomm silicon.

Like the Nothing Phone 2a, the Nothing Phone 2 offers 45W wired charging, while also throwing 15W wireless charging into the mix. This makes it easy to quickly top up your phone if you need some extra battery life before heading out the door.

10. iPhone 15 Plus (14:14)

The iPhone 15 Plus not only offers the best battery life of all of Apple's latest iPhones; it's also the longest-lasting iPhone we've ever tested, lasting over 14 hours. (That said, it only beat the iPhone 15 Pro Max by 12 minutes, though we'll review that model soon.) While the iPhone 15 Plus reportedly has a larger battery than its predecessor (Apple doesn't reveal battery sizes) it's likely the A16 Bionic, which helped the current model to be used more efficiently.

We wish the iPhone 15 Plus could charge faster, especially since Apple switched to USB-C and ditched the proprietary Lightning port. But charging speeds still top out at 20W. In any case, you can use the same cable on your iPhone that you would now use on your computer or iPad.

11. RedMagic 8 Pro (14:14)

The RedMagic 8 Pro matches the iPhone 14 Plus' score on our battery test, making this durable phone a great option for gamers who don't want their device to break during marathon sessions. Yes, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset delivers the stunning graphics performance gamers demand, but don't forget about this phone's battery life.

Thanks to 65W wired charging speeds, it won't take long to top up the 6,000mAh battery and get back to gaming. If you're looking for a more versatile phone with better camera performance, look elsewhere, but if you want to game from dusk to dawn, it's hard to beat the RedMagic 8 Pro.

Smartphones with the longest battery life (14)

12. iPhone 15 Pro Max (14:02)

Like the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro Max lasted more than 14 hours on our battery test - a truly impressive time for one of Apple's flagship devices. We credit the A17 Pro chipset, which is built on a 3nm process. This makes the transistors more densely packed than with a 4nm chipset, which generally leads to more efficient power management.

You can charge your iPhone 15 Pro Max with USB-C now that the Lightning port on all iPhone 15 models has disappeared. That doesn't mean charging speeds will improve, even though the iPhone 15 Pro Max supports USB 3 data transfer speeds of 10Gbps if you use the right cable.

Smartphones with the longest battery life (15)

13. Samsung Galaxy S24 (13:28)

What a difference the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset makes. Last year, Samsung's flagship delivered a better-than-average time of 10 hours and 27 minutes on our battery test. The Galaxy S24 improved that time by 3 hours. Yes, the S24's battery is slightly larger at 4,000 mAh. But it's clearly the power management features in the Snapdragon silicon that are doing the heavy lifting here to extend battery life.

If you want to criticize the Galaxy S24's power management features, wired charging remains stuck at 25W. That allows you to reach a 54% charge after 30 minutes, but that's not much better than what the iPhone 15 with its 20 charging speeds W can do.

Smartphones with the longest battery life (16)

14. OnePlus Nord N300 (13:13)

We have some issues with the OnePlus Nord N300, but battery life isn't one of them. This budget offering from OnePlus lasted 13 hours and 13 minutes on our battery test, which paired the Asus Zenfone 9 and the Nubia RedMagic 6S Pro. The OnePlus Nord N300 has managed this with a screen refresh rate set to 90Hz, so you don't have to worry about a fast-refreshing screen ruining your phone's battery life.

We also like the 33W charging speeds this $228 phone supports. Unfortunately, battery life is about all this phone has, as the cameras and performance underperformed in our tests, and OnePlus only promises one software update. The phone is exclusive toT MobilInMetromed T-Mobile, so you'll only find it at the two companies in the US.

If you don't want to spend a lot on a phone that will last a long time, the OnePlus Nord N300 could be an option, although we'd steer you towards the slightly more expensive OnePlus Nord N30, which also made it onto our ranking of the best phone battery life. .

Read our fullOnePlus Nord N300 review.

Smartphones with the longest battery life (17)

15. Asus Zenfone 9 (13:13)

Just because the Asus Zenfone 9 is a compact device doesn't mean it can't pack a lot of battery life into its slim frame. Asus' latest flagship lasted over 13 hours on our dough test with the adaptive refresh rate enabled. That would be impressive enough, but the Zenfone 9 did all that without turning to a powerful battery for help. The 4,300mAh power pack certainly doesn't skimp on capacity, but compared to the 5,000mAh cells you'll find on this list of the best phone battery life, it's clear that Asus has worked hard to ensure the Zenfone 9 has the get the most out of every phone. attack.

In terms of charging, the Zenfone 9 supports 30W speeds and Asus includes a charger with its phone. This should allow you to charge the phone's battery quite quickly - not that you need to charge this compact phone very often.

How we test for best phone battery life

Every phone we test is extensively tested in addition to daily use. The most relevant test for determining the best phone battery life is our own Tom's Guide Battery Life test. (A complete overview of the tests we perform can be found in our guide tohow Tom's Guide tests and reviews smartphones.)

In this test, we set a phone's display to 150 nits so we can get consistent results. We then run a script on the phone that allows it to browse the web through the default browser app until the phone runs out of power, and we time the results. Phones with the longest lifespan end up on the list of the best phone battery life, although we omit devices older than 18 months to keep our list of the longest-lasting phones up to date.

Many smartphones – especially premium models – now offer screens with faster refresh rate settings. Because a high refresh rate can drain a phone's battery faster, we test phones several times: once with the screen set to the maximum refresh rate and once with it locked to 60Hz. We indicate which setting yielded which battery life in our review and in our ranking of the best phone battery life, although we prefer phones that score well at the highest refresh rates.

We do another test with smartphone batteries, where we determine how long it takes for an empty phone to charge. We record the charge percentage after 15 and 30 minutes of charging a phone that is empty. For this test we use the charger that comes with the phone; In cases where a phone is shipped without a charger (always with premium handsets) we will use a charger that can deliver the fastest charging speed supported by the phone as specified in the device specifications.

Battery tests are part of the tests we perform to review phones. We also run benchmarks to evaluate a phone's performance, measure screen brightness and color reproduction to evaluate the display, and take more photos to evaluate cameras. All of this helps us assign ratings to devices in our smartphone reviews, although our battery test is the only result that affects the rankings regarding the list of the best phone battery life.
