GEM Douglas Fir chips are large chips, planed from wood that has not been kiln dried. This gives the chips a moisture content of 20 - 25% compared to 12 - 15% for typical chips, resulting in a virtually dust-free shave. This makes GEM Douglas Fir chips the perfect bedding for large animal hospitals, riding schools, stables, horse houses, rabbit hutches and chicken coops.
Because GEM chips come from Douglas Fir, there is a reduced phenolic load (compared to cedar and pine chips) to reduce respiratory irritation or contact. Cases of phenolic reactions have been reported in a wide variety of animals, including horses, goats, chickens, rabbits, pigs and dogs. It is advised not to place small animals in cedar or pine shavings, which is why these Douglas Fir shavings are a better choice.
Finally, the bag is a great value as it holds 8 cubic feet of chips, compared to the 7.5 cubic feet found in most brands.
We also offer Mallard Creek Mini Flake shavings - a much smaller flake that provides a clean, easy to sift bedding. An oven-dried product that absorbs effectively and reduces the size of your compost pile. The small size makes it easy to collect what needs to go, but leaves a soft bed for longer.
We also offer straw litter for the comfort of your animal. Straw bales can be used for animal bedding (large, medium and small), gardening, soil erosion, target practice or seating for special events. Our bales are clean, fresh and easy to handle.
