Testing your blood sugar levels can help you make informed decisions about your diet, activity and, if you adjust insulin yourself, dosing requirements.
Keep in mind that not all blood glucose meters are the same, so you may need to adjust the method slightly here.
What do I need to test my blood sugar level?
To test your blood sugar level, use:
- -inblood sugar meter
- -intest currentIn
- a finger prick
Some blood glucose meters come with test strips and/or sticks.
Ask your doctor if you are unsure.
How to test your blood sugar level
- To prepareyour kit is ready for testing.
- This should include the following:your meter, Atest currenton hand (it may be advisable to have an extra strip on hand), thewings the dot(dots), cotton wool (optional) and amonitoring diaryto record the results
- Make sure that the lancing unit is filled with thisthe lancet
- Wash and dry your hands– to ensure that the result is not affected by any sugars that may be present on your fingers
- When your fingers are warm, you get a fuller drop of blood. So it's worth warming your hands if possible. Be careful not to overheat your fingers so you don't injure yourself.
- Put onetest strip in this device
- Prick the fingerwith the lancing device on the sides of the finger, because there are fewer nerve endings here than at the tips or 'pads'.
- Recommended finger: The World Health Organization recommends using the middle or ring fingers (second and third fingers) for blood glucose measurements. You may want to avoid using your little finger because the skin is thin.
- You may have to squeeze the finger slightly until blood comes out. If you find yourself needing to squeeze hard, try inserting a finger again.
- If blood comes,Check if the meter is readyand thentransfer the blood to the test stripand wait a few seconds – most meters nowadays give a result within 10 seconds and often faster.
- If the test fails, repeat from step 4.
- If the test is successful,remove all bloodyour finger - if necessary with the cotton ball
- Record the resultin a monitoring diary
