What is length?

Length is the size of the space between two points. Measurements are made using instruments such as a measuring ruler, meter ruler, caliper, micrometer screw gauge, etc.

Smaller length distances are measured using a caliper and a micrometer screw gauge.

What is a meter rule?

A meter rule is a device used to measure the length of various objects. It is calibrated in millimeters and centimeters.

A meter rule with a length of 1 m is equal to 100 centimeters (cm). On the meter rule, each cm is further divided into 10 divisions called millimeters (mm).

Some measures are calibrated in inches or feet. The reading accuracy of a meter line is 1 mm or 0.1 cm.

Vernier caliper:

Calipers are used to measure small lengths (0 – 15 cm). This caliper is useful for measuring the diameter of round objects. It has a reading accuracy of 0.01 cm. A pair of vernier scales consists of a main scale (m) and a vernier scale (s).

The outer jaws are used to measure the outer dimensions of an object and the inner jaws to measure the inner or inside dimensions. To measure, gently grasp the object with the straight edges of the outer or inner jaw.

Accuracy of caliper:

The accuracy of a Norn caliper is 0.1 mm or 0.01 cm. This means that the smallest distance a caliper can measure is0,1 mmof0,01 cm.

FAQs

What is the most accurate measuring instrument? ›

The Vernier caliper with the lowest value of least count is the one with the highest accuracy.

What is the instrument used to measure length or distance? ›

Tools that can be used to measure length include rulers, vernier calipers, micrometer screw gauges, measuring tape and odometers. The most precise tool used to measure length are vernier calipers.

How does vernier caliper and screw gauge work for measuring length? ›

Answer and Explanation:

It has both upper inside jaws and lowers outside jaws. On finding the inside length of an object, it is placed between the upper jaws; while measuring the outer distance of an object, you put it in between the lower jaws and reading is checked; therefore, length is found.

What is the method of measuring length? ›

The length of any object can be found in either way such as using a scale (i.e., ruler), measuring tape and so on. These tools are generally used to measure the length of the given objects. Ruler is used for measuring small objects as the maxim length of an ideal ruler is 30 cm.

Which instrument has highest accuracy? ›

Hence the correct answer is Rectifier meter has the highest accuracy in the prescribed limit of the frequency range.

What is the most precise instrument for measuring length? ›

Thus the optical instrument is having the minimum least count among all the instruments listed. So the optical instrument is most precise of all the listed instruments.

What is the most accurate way to measure length? ›

Digital tape measures are accurate for both short distances and long distances up to 300 feet. They are also portable and easy to use. However, there are limitations as well. Laser tape measures should only be used indoors, and they only work if there is a solid endpoint for them to reflect a beam against.

What are the three instruments for measuring length? ›

Length can be measured by meter scale, measuring tape, and ruler.

What instrument is most commonly used to measure length? ›

The most commonly used instrument to measure the length in the day-to-day life of a straight line is a ruler.

How accurate is a micrometer screw gauge? ›

A micrometer (micrometer screw gauge) is an instrument for precise measurement of small distances. The sleeve, which moves the spindle by turning, is graduated with scale divisions that provide a measuring accuracy of 1/100 (0.01) mm.

Can micrometer screw gauge measure length? ›

The precision of length measurements may be increased by using a device that uses a sliding vernier scale. Two such instruments that are based on a vernier scale which you will use in the laboratory to measure lengths of objects are the vernier callipers and the micrometer screw gauge.

Why is a micrometer more accurate than a vernier caliper? ›

In general (depending on the scale, model and range), micrometers will almost always provide a more accurate method of measuring components. A typical caliper, for instance, will have a resolution of 0.01mm or 0.0005”, whereas a micrometer of similar specification would have a resolution of 0.001mm or 0.00005”.

What are the 7 units of length? ›

The metric system includes kilometer, hectometer, decameter, meter, decimeter, centimeter, and millimeter. There is a relationship between these units.

What is the oldest form of measurement? ›

Often considered the first unit of measurement, the cubit was developed by the ancient Egyptians and was the length of the arm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger (about 18 inches).

What is the most accurate instrument to measure time? ›

Atomic clocks are the most accurate timekeepers. The best ones lose or gain 1 second in 109 days. This means that once synchronized, for generations we need not reset the clock. Therefore, these clocks are used as primary standards for international time.

Which measuring apparatus is the most accurate? ›

Measuring cylinders are more accurate than a beaker and a conical flask. A measuring cylinder can measure volumes of liquids to the nearest 0.5 cm3. The pipette is slightly more accurate compared to measuring cylinders. It is used to measure a fixed volume of a liquid, such as 10.0 cm3, 20.0 cm3 and 25.0 cm3.

Which measurement is the most accurate? ›

The most precise measurements tend to be measurements of ratios or differences. For example, we know the ratio of the charge on the proton to the charge on the electron to 21 decimal places, despite only knowing what the charge on an electron is* to nine decimal places.

What is the most accurate system of measurement? ›

The metric system, also known as the Système International (SI) and the International System of Units, is the most common measurement system worldwide. It's a base-10 system that uses the meter as a unit of length, the kilogram as a unit of mass, and the second as a unit of time.
